A grave for Yusuf of the house of al-Dhakkar, who has
A portrait of Yousef among the chaste ones has
perished like a bough snapped in youth.
Perished like a branch in its prime cut down
وَلَّىdeparted بلاwithout ثَمرٍfruit وَغادرَand left بِعدَهُafter him
مُهَجاًhearts تَذوبُmelt وَأَدمُعاًand tears تُستَنزَفُare drained away
He departed without fruit and left behind him
He left without fruit and after him remains
hearts that melt and tears that are drained away.
A heart melting, eyes weeping profusely
أَلقَتcast بِهِhim الأَقدارُthe fates ضِمنَwithin قَرارَةٍa hollow
هِيَit مِثلُlike ذاكَthat الجُبِّthe well فيماas يُعرفُis known
The fates cast him into a hollow;
Fate cast him into the heat of misfortune
it is like that well, as is known.
Like a pit covered over, known only after falling in
وَلِذاand therefore مُؤرِّخُهُhis chronicler بَكاهُwept for him قائِلاًsaying
لَهَفِيmy anguish لَوَif only اُنَّكَthat you تَشتَريyou could be bought ياO يُوسُفُYusuf
And so his chronicler wept for him, saying:
Thus his chronicler wept over him, saying
Alas, if only you could be bought, O Yusuf!
My longing, if only you could be saved, O Yousef
