    no dead man who has dwelt there leaves the grave.

    No day has passed, whatever its vicissitudes,

    but we made you its examiner that day.

  4. أو راقنا ثوبه ونضرته

    Or, if its robe and freshness charmed us,

    lo, we saw its shroud within its robe.

  5. آليت لا يستخفني أملٌ

    في الغد أو تستغرني حسنه

    I have sworn that no hope will carry me away

    for tomorrow, nor will its charms beguile me.

  6. الدهر لولا الآمال مشتبهٌ

    والمرء في نسفه يرى زمنه

    Time, but for hopes, would be all alike;

    and a man sees his time in his destruction.
