Is there anyone to help with my secret thoughts and misgivings?

Or any way to cool my sighs?

    وأنثني وأمامي جد عباس

    I turn my gaze back to the past, and it smiles at me;

I turn again, and what lies before me is utterly grim.

What has passed is not mere days that I can count,

But life itself—alas for me, and oh, my despair!

And time does not restore fleeting moments of good fortune,

Nor renew what wears away in people.

If what lies ahead could replace what has passed,

I would not have filled my pages with reproaches against the days.

Time, in its shifting turns, decreed an affliction for me,

For which there is no cure, while it grants health to the untroubled.

Once I frolicked in a garden whose robes

Had borders embroidered with roses and myrtle.

My earth was silvered, lush, and gilded,

And in my sky were stars that kept me company.

    If I wished, the birds sang cooing songs to me;

    Or, if I wished, the roses' mouths were my cups;

Or, if I wished, beneath the shade of drooping boughs

That bent over me in many colors and kinds,

I filled my eyes with beauty, not in stolen glances,

But in an intent gaze brimming with my feeling.

But now the gentle life is gone, and I have received nothing

In its place but barrenness and withering.

And the rose now hides its fair cheek

From the eyes and reveals its cruel thorns.

An age has ended; I never won my desire

From it, nor did the stems of my plantings put forth leaves.

Why do the doves sing to me upon a bough,

Supple in its bending, bright with blossoms, swaying?

And how has the garden donned its brocade, rejoicing,

And gone about in it, while my heart is grieving and sorrowful?

A world that drains my gladness, yet smiles at me

Like a sharp sword, flashing as it falls toward the head.

Far from it! The world cares nothing for one in anguish,

Nor heeds the happiness or misfortune it brings.

The garden will not shed the rain's robes in grief

    And put on faded striped cloth for people's sake;

Nor will the blossoms frown at a sorrow that crushes me,

Nor will my turmoil and troubled thoughts silence the birds.

Should time take back whatever gift it bestowed,

It is time's way to strip the clothed young man bare.

Or should patience mend hearts and turn them

From remembering us, my own heart does not forget.

And how could I forget them, when my heart follows them

Through longings both new and worn?
