A fragrance like the breaths of the beloved,

    when she brings her mouth close to you;

and gossamer veils—the cloud spent the night

showering them until it drenched them.

It withered, and its beauty grew threadbare.

Oh, would that I knew what had befallen it!

I watered it with my tears,

if that rain could bring it back to life.

And I clasped it as one clasps a beloved,

hoping its youth might return to it.

And I sighed, hoping my sighs

would help, but they deepened its withering.

So I cast it away; and, despite myself,

it was I who had cast it away.

And had I been able, I would have bent my ribs

    over its fading radiance,

and made my breast its grave,

and made my entrails its earth.
