She saw us after we had wound the turbans about ourselves,

And we rose to battle, brandishing sharp swords.

Then she said, tears from her eye rolling like pearls

Upon her cheek: 'Stop, stop! Remain standing where you are.

Confide what you concealed; proclaim, divulge what

You kept hidden, and go safely in God's protection.'

The jewelry glints upon her, and her perfume

Rouses whoever is asleep to embrace.

Then my soul yearned for her, and I rose to intercept

Her after she turned away, trailing her robes.

So I walked beside her in the darkness, while she

And I were both watched; we feared gossip.

Belongs to whoever brought about the act I was seeking.

In revealing this secret anything but noble deeds.

In secret; even if I did, I would not keep it hidden,

Though I am in a dwelling other than her home,

And I declare that I had already risen resolutely.

And I end my words with blessings upon the one

Through whom my Lord sealed prophethood.
