الصبر في الملك الديان مفروض

فاصبر فإن سبيل الحق مبغوض

Patience for the sake of the Sovereign, the Judge, is enjoined.

Patience in the just king is obligatory

So be patient, for the path of truth is hated.

So be patient, for the path of truth is hated

ما دام أهل التقى لم تعل رايتهم

ما دام أهل التقى لم تعل رايتهم

أهل الطغى فهم القوم المباغيض

أهل الطغى فهم القوم المباغيض

So long as the banner of the pious has not risen

As long as the people of piety have not raised their flags

above the tyrants, they are the hated folk.

The people of tyranny, they are the hated folk

كان النبيء وكان الوحي يرشده

كان النبيء وكان الوحي يرشده

يلقى الأذى وله في الصبر تحريض

يلقى الأذى وله في الصبر تحريض

The Prophet, while revelation guided him,

The prophet was and revelation guided him

would suffer harm, and was exhorted to patience.

He suffered harm, and patience urged him

كم مرة ذرفت بالدمع مقلته

كم مرة ذرفت بالدمع مقلته

اذغال صحبته وطي وترميض

اذغال صحبته وطي وترميض

How often his eye streamed with tears

How often his eyelids shed tears

when trampling and scorching ravaged his companions!

When his companions oppressed and harmed him

لو عاين السفها يوماً وقد خضبت

لو عاين السفها يوماً وقد خضبت

بالفرث لمته والسن مرضوض

بالفرث لمته والسن مرضوض

Had the fools seen him one day, when

If the foolish saw a day when his beard was dyed

his locks were stained with gut-filth and his tooth was crushed,

With dust and his tooth knocked out

حتى مضى بلد الأحباش أكثرهم

حتى مضى بلد الأحباش أكثرهم

والمصطفى أعفر الخدين مركوض

والمصطفى أعفر الخدين مركوض

until most of them departed for the land of the Abyssinians,

Until he went to the land of the Abyssinians, most of them

while the Chosen One was dust-cheeked and kicked;

And the Chosen One, cheeks covered in dust, banished

أو عاينوه وقد حل العصاة به

أو عاينوه وقد حل العصاة به

في الغار والصاحب الصديق معضوض

في الغار والصاحب الصديق معضوض

or seen him when the defiant had descended upon him

Or they saw him when the rebels descended upon him

in the cave, while his companion al-Siddiq was bitten;

In the cave and the truthful companion bruised

أو شاهدوا بحنين كيف كان وما

أو شاهدوا بحنين كيف كان وما

صالى وما فعلت في جيشه البيض

صالى وما فعلت في جيشه البيض

or witnessed at Hunayn how he fared and what

Or witnessed in Hunain how it was and what

he endured, and what the white swords did to his army;

He prayed and what his white army did

أو حين عاد عن البيت العتيق على

أو حين عاد عن البيت العتيق على

قسر وعارضه في ذاك تعريض

قسر وعارضه في ذاك تعريض

or when he turned back from the Ancient House under

Or when he reluctantly returned from the Ancient House

compulsion, and met with veiled reproach over it;

And they hinted at blame in that

أو حين قال له أهل النفاق بها

أو حين قال له أهل النفاق بها

في وعد ربك يا كذاب تمريض

في وعد ربك يا كذاب تمريض

or when the hypocrites said to him there:

Or when the hypocrites told him lies

"Your Lord's promise is doubtful, you liar!"

In your Lord's promise, O fabricator of lies

أو حين قال وقال المسلمون له

أو حين قال وقال المسلمون له

نصر الاله متى والدين معضوض

نصر الاله متى والدين معضوض

or when he spoke, and the Muslims said to him:

Or when he and the Muslims said to him

"When is God's help?"—while the faith was being gnawed at;

When will God give victory and the religion be supported

لو أن دعوته في الأرض قد عمرت

لو أن دعوته في الأرض قد عمرت

عشراً للعلم المختار مكضوض

عشراً للعلم المختار مكضوض

had his call endured on earth

Had his call in the land lasted ten

for ten years—surely the chosen beacon was sorely pressed—

The chosen knowledge would be erased

لم يستمر إِمام ناله وصب

لم يستمر إِمام ناله وصب

أو ناله لكلام الهجر تمضيض

أو ناله لكلام الهجر تمضيض

no leader would have persevered when illness struck him,

No leader who attained it and was poured

or when words of abuse brought him stinging pain,

Or was poured into him insults and threats remained

من بعد ما علموا علم اليقين معاً

من بعد ما علموا علم اليقين معاً

بأن مطلبه نصح وتحضيض

بأن مطلبه نصح وتحضيض

after they had all known with utter certainty

After they knew with sure knowledge together

that his purpose was sincere counsel and exhortation.

That his goal was advice and encouragement

لكن عنت لهم الأخيار واتعظت

لكن عنت لهم الأخيار واتعظت

فالعهد من خدع الأشرار منقوض

فالعهد من خدع الأشرار منقوض

Yet the righteous bowed to them and took heed;

But the virtuous were harmed and took heed

for the covenant is broken by the wicked's deceptions.

So the covenant of the wicked is annulled

واليوم إِن ضحك الكفار أو سخروا

واليوم إِن ضحك الكفار أو سخروا

فأعلم بأن غداً هم هم مداحيض

فأعلم بأن غداً هم هم مداحيض

And today, if the unbelievers laugh or mock,

And today if the disbelievers laugh or mock

then know that tomorrow they, they themselves, will be brought low.

Know that tomorrow they will be the ones in anguish

إِن يسخروا بالاه العالمين ففي

إِن يسخروا بالاه العالمين ففي

قعر الجحيم لهم لفح وتقضيض

قعر الجحيم لهم لفح وتقضيض

If they mock the God of all worlds, then in

If they mock the God of the worlds, then in

the depths of Hell, scorching blasts and crushing await them,

The depths of Hell for them is burning and fragmentation

بعد العذاب بأيدي المؤمنين إِذا

بعد العذاب بأيدي المؤمنين إِذا

ما المرهفات لها في الهام تقويض

ما المرهفات لها في الهام تقويض

after torment at the believers' hands, when

After the torment at the hands of the believers, when

the keen-edged swords shatter heads.

The sensitive ones among them have their resolve undone

كم قابل لسبيل الحق منك غداً

كم قابل لسبيل الحق منك غداً

قد رده سفهاً والحق مبغوض

قد رده سفهاً والحق مبغوض

How many will tomorrow accept the path of truth from you,

How many faced the path of truth from you tomorrow

having rejected it in folly—for truth is hated.

Whom foolishness turned away, and truth is hated

فاصبر على السفها صبر الكرام وكن

فاصبر على السفها صبر الكرام وكن

جلداً فذكرك للشكواء مرفوض

جلداً فذكرك للشكواء مرفوض

So endure the fools with the patience of the noble, and be

So be patient with the foolish, the patience of the generous

steadfast, for your voicing of complaints is rejected,

And be steadfast, for your mention to the complaining is refused

حتى ترى فرجاً من واحد أحد

حتى ترى فرجاً من واحد أحد

كل الخلائق في يمناه مقبوض

كل الخلائق في يمناه مقبوض

until you see relief from the One, the Only One;

Until you see relief from The One, The Unique

all creatures are grasped in His right hand.

All creation in His right hand gripped

هذا بقة من كل الأمور له

هذا بقة من كل الأمور له

والخلق ثم إِذا ما خاف تهضيض

والخلق ثم إِذا ما خاف تهضيض

This is a bug among all His affairs [wording unclear];

This remains from all matters for Him

and creation is there whenever it fears being crushed.

And creation, then if we fear fragmentation

واقرا السلام على المختار سيدنا

واقرا السلام على المختار سيدنا

إِن السلام على المختار مفروض

إِن السلام على المختار مفروض

And convey greetings of peace to the Chosen One, our master;

And read peace upon the Chosen One, our master

indeed, greetings of peace upon the Chosen One are enjoined.

For peace upon the Chosen One is obligatory
