O Time, you have dried up the branch of my youth,

And scattered my life among the wandering nights.

Ah, can what has passed, O Time, return?

Or is all that has passed me by never to return?

So why did those who blamed me blame me when I came to hate

Your nearness—or is there no eternity in you for anyone?

I love youth whose splendor never fades,

And a vast kingdom, enduring and imperishable,

And ninety fair-eyed maidens from tents encircled

By palms and grapevines, their clusters within reach.

Virgins who, when I have deflowered them, are then restored

As virgins, just as before, to an envier's chagrin.

And nothing stands between me and this but a brief hour of endurance,

And a few little steps forward, cleaving the backs of skulls.

When the two cavalry hosts take fright, I set blood rippling,

And heap up the fallen as their throats spurt.

And the ignoble knew with utter certainty

That the faithful among them numbered less than one.

It is death: if I do not cast myself toward it,

It shoots me from behind with arrows aimed at me.

Then, by God, how splendid and noble is the young man

When he dies amid the lances, without fleeing.

Ah, I care not, once my lifeblood has been drawn out,

Whether I become food for birds or am consigned to graves.

And you, Abu Abd al-Ilah: there have indeed come

To me rhymes from you, like files.

I shall thank you for them as long as I live, and I was gladdened

By your summons when you called, 'O noble ones!'

And my delight in your words is not in their versification,

But composing odes is a sign of resolve.

So leave off praising me, and never cease

Rousing the people of faith; strengthen and aid them.

And in your earthly life be always girded for action,

With broad strides; in it the idle have no excuse.

And send blessings, as God and His creation have,

Upon Ahmad the Chosen, the adornment of gatherings.
