My two friends, I restrain through reproach,

and through rebuke; indeed, rebuke deters the freeborn.

    ولكن تعظيمي على ذاك واسع

    Nor is abandoning my censure of the deserter permissible;

yet my esteem, despite that, remains ample.

Have you not witnessed that I strive, unsheathed,

while everyone I pledged allegiance to yesterday is submissive?

Have you not witnessed that I strive, unsheathed,

a keen sword, cutting as I was yesterday?

I stayed a year and a half for them, waiting in hope,

saying, 'Tomorrow someone will emerge from the people.'

But behold, they are no people who seek their cause

for truth, nor does anyone among them contend for it.

I say to the people of faith, now that their faith has become

an orphan, with no tears shed over it:

O heedless ones, how could you manage

sleep, while around me there are battles every day?

Yet formerly you were our rulers,

and you abandoned us when the cutting blades sang.

You were like players who made a pact

to play, then spent the night apart from it, all asleep.

    ومن بعد هذا شدة وزعازع

    You took God's covenants for play, and His pledge too;

and after this come hardship and upheavals.

You demolished the beacon of faith when you submitted,

as though the outspoken Shurāt had never raised it.

O children, will you look at

the deeds of elders seasoned by harsh affronts?

You supposed that abasement lay within you, because you

think abasement raises the chaste man.

God forbids it! We, O kin of ‘Ammār Yāsir,

cleave the toughest heads while battle-dust rises.

And have children among us ever sat accepting oppression?

And has anyone among us been content with humiliation?

And did any lion among us in olden times live

true to his faith except as an armored defender?

May God curse one whose soul calls him to weakness,

even if alone and obedient to God.

For the people's only weakling is their fool,

and even if eloquent, he is decisive in war.

My two friends, tell those who have grown abject

and become like a sandal: will they not reconsider

and plunge into battle in obedience to God?

For the imam of justice is crossing blades there.

    ولا تسمعوه الشتم فالشتم قاذع

    Help an imam whose right hand pledged itself to you;

and do not make him hear abuse, for abuse is foul.

If you say, 'The imam has strayed from guidance,'

there are no veils over the imam's face.

    فإن أفلجته بالحجاج الجمائع

    You have presented a clear argument to meet his argument;

then if the assemblies overcome him in argument

    وإلا فحد السيف والدين ناصع

    and he returns repentant, you return under his command;

otherwise, the sword's edge—and the faith is clear.

And if no summons ever gained strength for the messengers,

nor for any mortal, except through what cleaves,

why do you forsake him and sit idle

while before him lie death-grounds for humankind?

If you say, 'Behold, that is a collective duty,'

then this claim was a reproach: you had not pledged allegiance,

and if the imam's sword were not unsheathed,

going out evening and morning through the lands, engaging in battle.

And your plea of busyness, when you said, 'We have

homes, children in them, and livelihoods'—

did the Harūrīs not have dwellings,

families, children in them, and farms?

Thus the Bedouins spoke before you did:

'Indeed, the luxuriant, splendid ones have occupied us.'

You forsook—by the Lord of the House—the man who hoped

to repel twice the enemy's numbers with your help and grapple with them.

You forsook him and spoke as young men spoke

to Moses, while the gleam of bright swords fell upon heads:

'Rise, then fight them, you and your Lord; indeed, we

are weak, and those people are a valiant people.'

So my Lord condemned them and accused them of it,

and called them transgressors; transgression is foul.

And in the Reminder—by God the Almighty—are proofs

that condemn deserters, if only there were a listener.

Otherwise, I call God to witness; so bear witness

that, for God's sake, I sever unbelief's cord.

If you strike a fire-stick for the faith, then I

long for that, as long as you endure, throughout all time:

selling my soul, expending its life,

to Him to whom every creature submits for all time.

So take it: it has no fault, except that

    ears thrill to hear it.

And every base hypocrite turns away from it

when it is recited, and the deceiver recoils from it.

I close my words with blessings, offering peace

upon Aḥmad, as long as death's onset cuts lives short,

and as long as a bier therein is escorted to the Fire,

and another to Paradise, with creation following.
