Is it because of a sorrow visiting at nightfall

that you sang, or the memory of a departed beloved?

Or for soft, shapely maidens, young and graceful,

swaying like branches just above the cushions?

Or are you in love with this lowly world,

though only yesterday you did not love it?

nor do I long for what you have mentioned.

and never turn their backs on a day of fierce combat,

a day when affliction and hardships rage.

The covenant of the Lord of sunrises must be answered for.

Ah, would I knew how their minds went astray,

and how they could undo such binding knots,

and how they accepted humiliation after prevailing

over all, and followed behind every brayer.

They became like slaves in every town,

herded like livestock by every driver.

each would have remained meek in his chamber,

pressed against a fair-skinned maiden, embracing her.

should they object, I would silence them with fine distinctions.

to one made of water gushing from the loins,

when he takes care never to face a renegade?
