subtle in its meanings, veiled with the utmost concealment.

Refined in meaning, profound in implications

يتيه فؤاد الطب فيه تحيراً

إذا خاضه ينآى على كل فسار

إذا خاضه ينآى على كل فسار

The expert’s heart loses its way in it, bewildered,

The heart of the talented gets lost wandering in it

when he delves into it, it eludes every interpreter.

Should one dive in, he escapes all comprehenders

خدلجة كالشمس طاف خيالها

خدلجة كالشمس طاف خيالها

علي بليل في حليّ واعطار

علي بليل في حليّ واعطار

A full-figured woman, like the sun—her phantom visited

Khadija shines like the sun, her imagination hovered

me by night, adorned with jewelry and perfumes.

Around me at night in beauty and perfume

لها ثلث ثلثي ثلث ودّى وثلثه

لها ثلث ثلثي ثلث ودّى وثلثه

ومن ودها لي تسع قيراط معشار

ومن ودها لي تسع قيراط معشار

She has a third of two-thirds of a third of my love, and a third of it;

For her is a third, two thirds its third, and a third

and of her love, I have a ninth of a qirat of a tenth.

Of my love for her is nine carats and some

فلو كان لي من ودها نصف سدسه

فلو كان لي من ودها نصف سدسه

وثلثاً سديسيه إذا طفت بالدار

وثلثاً سديسيه إذا طفت بالدار

So if I had half of a sixth of her love,

If I had half of a sixth of her love

and two-thirds of its two sixths, when I wandered around the house.

And two thirds of its sixth when she passes the house

مررت بها يوماً فقامت وأقبلت

مررت بها يوماً فقامت وأقبلت

I passed by her one day; she rose and came forward,

I passed by her one day, she stood up and walked over

asking about an inheritance due to her, with a swagger.

The brother of the maternal uncle of the son of the paternal uncle of her sister’s son died,

The brother of the uncle of her cousin’s son died

and left her behind with four—O son of Sayyar—

Leaving her and four others, Oh Ibn Sayyar

بنات بني خال ابن عمة نجله

بنات بني خال ابن عمة نجله

وعمة عم ابن خال أخي الضار

وعمة عم ابن خال أخي الضار

daughters of the sons of the maternal uncle of the son of his son’s paternal aunt,

The daughters of the uncle of the son of the aunt’s son

and the paternal aunt of the paternal uncle of the son of the maternal uncle of the harmful one’s brother.

And aunt of the uncle of the son of the uncle, my enemy

فحصة احدى الفردتين تسيعه

فحصة احدى الفردتين تسيعه

وربع تسيعيه به قد قضى الباري

وربع تسيعيه به قد قضى الباري

So the share of one of the two individual women is a ninth of it,

So one of the two individuals gets one ninth of it

and a quarter of its two ninths; this the Creator has decreed.

And a quarter of its ninth which the Creator has ordained

ونصف خميسي ثلث ما قد بقي إلى

ونصف خميسي ثلث ما قد بقي إلى

سديسي خميسيه لاحداهما جار

سديسي خميسيه لاحداهما جار

And half of two-fifths of a third of what remains, together with

And half of its fifth, a third of what remains

two-sixths of its two-fifths, falls to one of the two.

To a sixth of its fifth for one of them comes

كذلك للغيداء ثلث تسيعه

كذلك للغيداء ثلث تسيعه

وثلثاً سديسه إِلى الثلث ياقار

وثلثاً سديسه إِلى الثلث ياقار

Likewise, the graceful woman has a third of its ninth,

Just like that, for the chubby one, a third of a ninth

and two-thirds of its sixth, added to the third, O reader.

And a third of a sixth up to a third, Oh soft one

ففسر لنا من مات أو من وراءه

ففسر لنا من مات أو من وراءه

وكم ماله أجزا هديت إِلى السار

وكم ماله أجزا هديت إِلى السار

So explain to us who died, or who was left behind him,

Explain to us who passed away and who remains

and how many parts his estate comprises—may you be guided to what gladdens.

How much was his money? You have guided the poetic to the peak

وتسع جميع الارث مع ثلث سدسه

وتسع جميع الارث مع ثلث سدسه

وسدس وثلث للثلاث فكن دار

وسدس وثلث للثلاث فكن دار

And a ninth of the whole inheritance, with a third of its sixth,

And nine sums the inheritance with its third of a sixth

and a sixth and a third, belong to the three—so be aware.

And a sixth and a third for the three so be a home
