Be certain; even if you cannot discern clearly, be certain.

For the sons of this world have little religious devotion.

Their hypocrite is hypocritical in every promise,

And their upright man is upright only while bearing no responsibility.

Have you not seen that I stayed among them for nights?

By God, I have observed them, though uncertain.

So gird yourself—may God guide you—striving with your very life

For honor; otherwise, lie down and become abject.

For men are either generous and refined,

Plunging into death's pools, or fallen and base.

So leave lands where, among their people, you attained no

Gain; leave them behind you—leave them—and go to Oman.

Then either you meet victory without weakness,

Or meet death without being abased.

O Banu Sahl, you hosted my company,

And sheltered me on the day my homeland fell into ruin.

And opposed the enemies in my defense, out of protective zeal,

And stood by me and took counsel to help me.

And I became a king among you, firmly established,

Sheltered, secure, honored, not held in contempt.

Except that, O people, I fulfilled no need

Among you, nor saw anything that pleased me.

I hoped you would champion the truth, after

I had tied my rope to you for a time, and my dwelling too.

But you neglected my cause and lost your way; perhaps

You will regret your neglect after having been able to act.

Yet my needs, whose fulfillment has proved difficult

For me, consist, in my view, in supporting the Guardian's faith.

    وإن تعجزوا قابلت أرضاً تعزني

    So if you support me, then hope rests in you;

And if you cannot, I will turn toward a land that honors me.

For neither the world nor any path has grown narrow

For me, nor are my cause and resolve of little worth.

So send a swift reply—may you never lack

Defenders—for honor ceaselessly spurs me on.

And invoke blessings upon him who established the faith and guidance,

And made it prevail by the sword after suffering injustice.
