إذا رمت أنساً للنفوس ولذة
فللشاهيthen, for tea فيin الوصفينthe two qualities مرتبةrank الفضلexcellence
فللشاهي في الوصفين مرتبة الفضل
If you seek comfort for souls and pleasure,
If you aim to delight souls and give them pleasure,
Then tea holds the rank of excellence in both qualities.
Then in these two types of poetry, lyric holds higher rank-
كماءlike the water of عقيقagate ينفحwafts المسكmusk ريحهits fragrance
كماء عقيق ينفح المسك ريحه
يناديit calls to مذاقthe flavor of النحلthe bees قصرتyou have fallen short عنof مثليmy equal
ينادي مذاق النحل قصرت عن مثلي
Like liquid agate, its fragrance wafts musk;
Like ruby water exuding the scent of musk,
It calls to the flavor of the bees’ honey: “You fall short of matching me.”
It lures the bees, though description falls short of matching it.
