My lord, O vulture, exalted in the heights,

beside those heights the roc bows its head.

Yours is truly the peregrine’s resolve, O its son,

and the eagle’s onslaught upon every shrieking roller.

I would ransom you, a hawk whose sanctuary is harder to reach than

the Egyptian vulture’s eggs—most exalted bearer of radiance.

You have surpassed the diligent falcon in skill

and eloquence, O deft, ever-leading one.

O you who put the parrot to shame in eloquence,

here I am, your ringdove, melodious and loud-voiced.

O best of the fortunate, favored by the most auspicious bird,

    O ever generous and compassionate,

O nightingale of joys in the great trees of hope,

and nightingale of solace for the lovesick, longing one,

may you remain, as long as doves call to Hadil,

a constant speaker of truth, never a dissembler.

We call upon you in grave calamity, and its distress is dispelled.

May you remain a store of help for companions.

Tell the lowly bird, the wren, the bat of darkness,

who mimics the owl in appearance and character,

another raven of parting, who found a dwelling

through a false report, propped up like hypocrisy:

O shrike, who is, compared with a safir,

more cunning and more cowardly—leave off quarrelling with me.

The swallow cannot, in its flight, match

the jush'a and the swift-winged falcon.

And the headache-causing songster—I have not counted it

among birds before, except as a piebald cawer.

Are you anything but like the bustard in nature?

For its weapon lies in its gushing droppings.

May you be disgraced, O faction of ruins, in abasement!

O sparrow-like one among the diraq,

in his ignorance he has come to expose himself

to the deadly marauder with beating wings.

Bow your head like [unclear] of the ostrich in the villages,

while the birds gaze at her with their eyes.

We are the pale hawks on the horizon of the heights,

before whom the phoenix bows its neck.

And the peacock claps its wings in wonder at us,

and the turtledove sings for lovers.

Ours are the far-roaming verses: some are birds of prey,

and others are cooing birds among the leaves.

Thus some people are shamed, while others through them

glory like grey doves in their neck rings.

Among the wonders—and to me they are many—

is my reproach of a crow devoid of worth.

And among time’s absurdities and ugliness

is my describing bats that have no protector:

vultures whose favorable flights bode ill to the augur,

    mimicking magpies, obsessed with discord.

And stay safe, and endure in a blessing as long-lived as Lubad,

everlasting and enduring, while your glory remains,

as long as grey doves sing and stir

the noble man’s passion and the searing pangs of longing.

For you are a blessing among us—indeed, a mercy,

    O Ahmad, rightly praised.
