شروداً أبى سرعةً أن يشاما
Lightning flashed, leading the south wind's caravan,
The stars marched slowly
elusive, refusing in its swiftness to be watched,
Wandering, refusing haste to journey on

ولمح ثغور الحسان ابتساما
faint as the pulse in a sick man's arm,
Secretly, like the pulse of a sick man's arm
and the flash of fair women's teeth as they smile.
And the smile of a beauty flashed

As though the sky were a saddle-patterned shawl,
As though the sky a scroll unrolled
and the clouds along both its edges were gilded.

It appeared like a flame, with night a lump of coal,
Dawned, glowing embers like flame
its sparks darting among the brilliant stars.
Sparks flying to the watchfires

ونبه لوعته ثم ناما
It stirred the heart's longings,
Stirring lovesick longings in the heart
and woke its anguish, then slept.
Waking its passion, then slept

It passed in the dead of night, and the heart took wing
Creeping weakly, the heart took flight
toward the memories it stirred, and wandered in love.
To what it remembered and dreamed of

It recalled its days at al-Ghamim,
Remembering its days in the shadows
and yearned, though they were nothing but a dream.
Yearning, though it was but a dream

Raising up from its depths of old
and passion bound him with an inescapable collar.
Girding it with bonds of passion

It provoked him, and heartache took him captive,
Teasing it, then leaving it raving
and stripped him bare, then doomed him to consuming passion.
Baring it, then decreeing it love

Since the eye departed, the tinder fell
it turned that blaze toward the heart.
Inclining to the heart the flints

Before it the sickness had lain
buried; it stirred his sickness anew.
Buried, then stirred up the illness

Raving, but in vain is succor to what

By your life that is not so, but rather
it remembered Najd and the days at Rama:
Remembering Nejd and days sporting

And time for us was a boy

The light avoided, so the darkness hid
