O eminent writers, hear a fair-minded man's plea:
O elevated people of the book, a call of an equitable person
Against you, he seeks your aid where justice is decided.
Upon you is to be with me at the passage of truth to be prepared
سمحتمyou were generous بنظمin stringing الدُّرِّthe pearls فيupon لَبَّةِthe upper chest العلاof glory
سمحتم بنظم الدُّرِّ في لَبَّةِ العلا
فكمand how many راقwas pleasing منof سمطa strand هناكthere ومنand of عِقدِa necklace
فكم راق من سمط هناك ومن عِقدِ
You have generously strung pearls upon glory's breast;
You allowed the stringing of pearls in the kernel of sublime
And how lovely were the many strands and necklaces there!
So how much necklaces and bracelets pleased from there
فماso what ضرَّكمharmed you أنْthat تسمحواyou permit ليto me بكتبهاto copy them
فما ضرَّكم أنْ تسمحوا لي بكتبها
فتستجزلواso you gain abundantly شكريmy thanks وتستوجبواand you merit حَمديmy praise
فتستجزلوا شكري وتستوجبوا حَمدي
So what harm would it do you to let me copy them,
So what would harm you to allow me to write it
And thereby gain my abundant thanks and merit my praise?
To deserve my gratitude and merit my praise
