حكىmirrored عَرْفَthe fragrance of منthe one whom أهوىI love وإشراقَand the radiance of خَدِّهِhis cheek
May God protect a blossom of the carnation kind.
God tended a flower of carnation kin
It mirrored the fragrance of the one I love and the radiance of his cheek.
Whose scent told of a love and radiant cheek
ومنبتهand its growing place فيon شاهقa lofty height متمنّعٍinaccessible
كماjust as امتنعheld himself aloof المحبوبthe beloved فيin تيهِthe haughtiness of صدِّهِhis rejection
And it grows on a lofty, inaccessible height,
And stalk shot up in lofty aloofness
Just as the beloved holds himself aloof in his haughty rejection.
As my beloved was aloof to love's entreaty
أميلI sway إذاwhen الأغصانthe branches مالتswayed بروضةٍin a garden
أعانقI embrace منهاfrom them القُضْبَthe shoots شوقاًout of longing لقدِّهِfor his form
I sway when the branches sway in a garden;
When the boughs in a garden lean down, I yearn
I embrace their shoots, longing for his form.
To embrace each twig longing for his form
وأهفوand I yearn لخفّاقfor the fluttering النسيمbreeze إذاwhen سرىwafted by
وأهوىand I love أريجthe fragrance of الطيبperfume منfrom عَرْقِthe sweat of نَدِّهِhis aromatic incense
And I yearn for the fluttering breeze when it wafts by,
And when the soft wind stirs, I swoon outright
And I love the perfume’s fragrance from his incense-scented sweat.
And love the fragrance from his dewy skin
