Love forbid that I keep my heart's company forgetful,
I seek refuge from accompanying a heart unfeeling,
or that reproachers occupy my mind with rebuke.
And from being occupied with blaming the devoted lover.

Leave me, you two, to grant love my fullest submission,
My love called me to give the best of my guidance,
and let passion decree against me whatever it will.
And let fervent passion overcome all that had come before.

Between me and what the reproachers sought stands a passion
Without the one the young beauties desired in their prime,
that hurled me into the farthest reaches of love's ravine;
I was struck by cupid’s arrows down love’s slippery slope.

Whenever lightning flashed, my tempestuous heart
I use to strike a fire-stick ablaze with longing.
Struck out sparks of longing and desire.

My dear friend, the day intentions changed,
I suffered through one who could ease my mind if he wished.
I was made wretched by one who, had he wished, could have blessed me.

in whom the water of bliss irrigates the daisies.
Gives me the water of delight to drink, pure and fresh.

and greet the morning thirsty, parched short of the watering place.
And dawn finds me athirst, beyond the roses languishing.

when the lightning of Najd appears to me late at night.
Whenever the Najdi lightning begins to flash.

Where my youth once passed so sweetly.

I have not seen a single quarter of it since, without
nor one with more plaintive doves or sweeter fruit to gather.
The most tormenting passions and the most delightful trysts.

I gave to drink the passion of love in the valleys,
pearls of rain around the branches' necks.
And from the drops I composed verses on the branches.

Never to deprive kindness and goodness their due.

While the shameless suitor fails in his quest?

And, provoking even greater passion were the wild geese
gazelles passing rightward, burnishing their necks and collarbones.
Gliding on the plains, burnishing themselves.

They distracted my eyes from all sights,
and left the fragments of hearts bleeding.
And so they captivated the hearts' baby gazelles.

At surpassing them, it remains suspended and weak.

Heights of glory: whenever a star sets its course to seek

their utmost reach in honor, it soars exhausted.
And exposes the emptiness of their wandering.

Neither hesitant nor faltering in his stride.

He advanced, neither cowed by the gathering and downcast,
In him are attributes from his father and grandfather -
nor shortening his steps there in hesitation.
You see glory residing and spreading through him.

In him are qualities from his father and grandfather,
If only we could ransom you with our innermost souls,
in which you see glory both hidden and manifest.
You would not have overcome us!

فديناك بالأعلاق ما كنت غالبا
O precious one who has filled hearts with yearning, if we
You walked, and our tears flowed in sympathy,
ransomed you with precious treasures, you would not be too dear.
As you inspired joy within them.

You ran, making tears flow in tenderness,
How many devoted guardians are at your door,
and caused fresh shoots of joy to rise within them.
Willing to sacrifice their precious souls to guard you!

A prey of lovely gazelles, the scions of the tribe,
would shield him, ransoming him with his precious life!
Who drive attackers away, or make enemies perish!

And proud lords of the two tribes, the sons of Qayla,
Young beauties - if they prepare for a raid,
repel assaults or annihilate enemies.
They return at daybreak with the enemy darker than night.

Radiant noblemen who, when they prepare for a raid,
By God, were you not concerned with gaining the Almighty's approval,
turn the tribe's morning black with darkness.

By God, had you not chosen an excision
They would have unleashed such chaos
pleasing to you because your Lord was pleased,
As to turn the youths' temples white with shock!

the horses of A'waj's breed would have charged there,
Leaving the twisted bodies of the elderly prone,
turning stout young men's forelocks gray,
And the gazelles’ flanks red with gore.

leaving spear-shafts broken at the joints,
But when God's destiny fulfilled itself,
and bright blades with bleeding, crimson backs.

When he had fulfilled what he fulfilled of God's prescribed practice,
We came to congratulate the most generous patron.
while the stars envied his endeavors,
God forbid generosity ever ceases!

we poured forth to congratulate you, the noblest benefactor,
So the Indian swords and courage congratulate you,
who insists that his boundless bounty flow without cease.
And the highland chiefs and honored nobles.

May it gladden Indian blades, valor, and generosity,
As do the pulsating stars - for you will tie them
brown spear-shafts and noble, full-grown steeds;
To the covenant of victory as a conqueror.

and may it gladden the fluttering banners, for
I imagine you distressing the swords and deer alike,
he will bind them under victory's protection when he campaigns.
And destroying the firmest heroes in combat.

I seem to see him setting keen swords and blades to toil,
I imagine you crowned King in your youth,
and shattering spear-tips against solid armor.
Gathering together the fragments of glory.

I seem to see him crowning kingship while still a youth,
Fulfilling the rights of pride in your virile prime,
and gathering scattered noble virtues while still growing.
And excelling in the debt of perfection.

He fulfills glory's claims in the prime of youth,
You are none but fortune itself, if you rise to the occasion,
and skillfully collects debts long deferred.
With your Lord Himself guiding your aim!

وسدَّدْت سهماً كان ربُّك راميا
He is good fortune itself, if you seek a rising-place;
You remain, O pride of the Caliphate, a guardian,
and you aimed an arrow whose archer was your Lord.
And you remain, O best of imams, sufficient.

May you always, O pride of the caliphate, be his guardian,
You remain, delight of his eye, to his joy,
and always, O best of imams, suffice for him.
With your Lord as protector.

وكانand may be لهfor him ربُّthe Lord of البريّةَcreation واقياa protector
وكان له ربُّ البريّةَ واقيا
May you remain joyfully content because of him,
I composed verses of potent speech as talismans for him,
and may the Lord of creation protect him.
Substituting rhymes for pearls within them.

نظمتُ له حرَّ الكلام تمائماً
جعلتُI placed مكانin place of الدُّرِّpearls فيهاin them القوافياrhymes
جعلتُ مكان الدُّرِّ فيها القوافيا
I strung for him the choicest words as amulets,
Talismans which make kings recoil in amazement,
setting rhymes in them where pearls would be.
And, by my life, refuse to belong to any but him.

لآلٍ بها تبأى الملوك نفاسة

Pearls whose preciousness makes kings proud,
I see time casting them before him as marvels,
though, by my life, they are too exalted to be pearls.
While only praise persists and remains.

I see wealth cast into decay by night and day,
and I see nothing enduring but praiseworthy deeds.
