لقدindeed علمknows اللهُGod أنّيthat I am امرؤٌa man
أُجَرِّرُI trail ذيلthe hem of العفافchastity القشيبْfresh and fine
God surely knows that I am a man
God knows well that I'm a man
Who trails chastity’s fresh, fine hem.
Who drags the tail of chastity in rags
فكمfor how often غمّضclosed الدهرُTime أجفانهits eyelids
وفازتand won قِداحيmy lot-casting arrows بوصلunion with الحبيبْthe beloved
For how often Time has closed its eyelids,
So often has time closed its eyes
And my lot-casting arrows have won me union with the beloved!
As my cups gained the love of the beloved
وقيلand it was said رقيبُكyour watcher فيin غفلةٍheedlessness
فقلتso I said أخافI fear الإلهGod الرقيبُthe Watchful
And it was said, “Your watcher is heedless,”
It's said "Your watcher sleeps"
So I said, “I fear God, the Watchful.”
I said "I fear God, the Watcher"
