Ask the Najdi lightning from Najd's two landmarks—

It smiled and made my eyelids weep with longing.

Did it drench my dwellings at al-Liwa—blessed be al-Liwa—

And did the clouds pour rain there after my departure?

O drivers of the camel litters, whose mounts are lean,

Let them reach Najd's waters, thirst-crazed and parched.

Do not inhale their breaths with the east wind,

For the sighing of longing from such creatures is contagious.

Passion whittled them like arrow shafts and traced them

As letters upon the desert's outstretched page.

I marvel at them: how can they vie with me in love,

When their longing is not mine, nor their passion my passion?

Though what they yearn for, between al-Udhayb and Bariq,

Is water beneath the shade of ben trees and laurels,

Only the full moons of their curtained chambers stirred my longing,

When they appeared on departure day in forms like supple boughs.

How many suns beneath canopies in the tribe's domed tents,

And auspicious moons within the orbit of their buttons!

How many sharp swords drawn from a dark-eyed glance,

And slender spears brandished from a tender, graceful form!

Beware the dwellers of Rama, for they are

Frail women whose glances' onslaught slays lions.

Arrows of eyelids, loosed from bows of eyebrows,

    Deliberately strike an innocent heart.

And a garden of beauty whose breeze spread its fragrance—

Yet nothing was lost except the roses upon the cheek.

And narcissus eyes sent down tears as pearls,

Sprinkling a garden of roses with rosewater.

How many a bough embraced another like itself,

Each seeking redress against the other because of longing.

An ugly farewell revealed to our eyes

Countless beauties from the garden of loveliness.

May God guard Layla; if I knew her road,

I would spread my cheek beneath the camels' padded feet along it.

And nothing stirred my longing—while the phantom feared my tears,

And swam through a sea of dusky night,

And lightning with fluttering tresses was unsheathed,

As a gleaming, polished blade is drawn from its scabbard,

And longing's adorned hand was shaken in the darkness,

Loosening the knot I had firmly tied for patience,

And a breeze disquieted my fluttering heart,

Whispering at daybreak, its cloaks fluttering,

And a gentle breeze blew, enfolding within its garments

Tidings it brought to al-Ghawr from Najd—

Except a songbird in the thicket, ignorant of love,

Yet summoning my sorrows at their appointed hour.

Does Layla know—may God make her night delightful—

That my eyelids never tire of wakefulness?

And a night, when the pilgrims arrived at Mina,

When my wishes granted me all I sought from her!

I attained from her more than I could imagine wishing,

And my mantle of chastity—may God preserve that mantle!

There was nothing but furtive glances we exchanged,

And plaints like pearls scattering from a necklace.

After that night, I forgave Time every wrong it did,

Except the harm that graying locks did to my heart.

Through this gray hair I learned the worth of my youth,

For the excellence of one opposite is always known through the other.

Whoever sleeps astray through youth's night

Will be awakened to right guidance by gray hair's dawn.

Indeed, by love, I have not strayed from love's path,

Nor swerved from the straight course on the ways of longing.

I have surpassed the lovers who went before,

And become a nation by myself in love's religion.

    وأقفر ربعُ القلب إِلاَّ من الوَجْدِ

    I am forgotten, yet I do not forget my loyalty and friendship;

My heart's dwelling lies desolate, save for longing.

To you, Abu Zayd, I raise this plaint,

For to me you are no mere Amr or Zayd.

By your life, tell me—you have always been gracious—

Do you feel a longing like the longing I feel?

How often a tormenting longing for you surged within me,

And longing's hand kept striking sparks from my fire-stick.

Even the wind clapped in the tresses of the hills,

And even the child in the cradle's midst felt pity.

Morning meets me with a cheek of yours,

Where the modesty you show resembles twilight's glow.

A bright brow makes me envision the shining sun

Upon your face—may God guard your face from rejection.

Your countenance is clearer to the eyes than morning light,

And your remembrance sweeter on the lips than honey.

You are none but the sun high in its horizon:

It benefits you nearby and is beheld from afar.

    وما نفعُ نور الشَّمسِ في الأعين الرُّمدِ

    In darkness is he whose eye cannot see the sun;

What use is sunlight to inflamed eyes?

Of a people who guard glory as one guards his eye,

Just as they let their wealth be plundered for gifts.

If ever they throng the water, all alike,

They throng only at glory's watering place.

Whenever they charge to aid those crying out to them,

They kindle war's fire in lowland and upland.

After praise, they store up no treasure

Except a polished sword and a powerful, well-poised steed.

None shared in the spoils but one lavish in praise,

Who filled them with the manes of fine, sleek steeds.

Do you forget our nights—surely you do not—

When we stole our life in the Garden of Eternity?

In youth's free gallop, we rode toward pleasures

On the mounts of night, carefree, yet within bounds.

Though we did not frequent winecups during them,

We drank there from fellowship's sweetest watering place.

I met you in the West, where you were its chief,

Your door a gathering place for delegations of eminent men.

You gave such companionship that I never complained of exile,

And such friendship that I felt no pang of loss.

I returned to my homeland, thankful for what I had experienced

Of praiseworthy character and deep-rooted nobility.

Until you crossed the sea toward us, O sea,

And visited as rain visits after hardship:

More delightful than bounty in a state of need,

More desired than happy union after rejection.

Though it grieved me that separation dismantled your camp,

And I received in exchange the camels' trot and swift stride,

I was gladdened that you appeared on the horizon of eminence,

Under a fortunate omen and an auspicious rising.

You rose on the eastern horizon, a guiding star,

And came there with the lights at the appointed time.

I swear by Him, as lean camels journey through the night,

With [unclear] upon them, they aimed at their journey's goal,

Toward His House, to visit sacred sites

Where Gabriel made known the noble covenant:

You are indeed the one who, whenever a problem's night grows dark,

Strikes a spark-kindling fire-stick within it, bringing light.

Wherever I set out in a caravan bound for a destination,

You are my soul's confidant, near and far.

I remain at the king's gate, where you knew me,

With far-reaching shades of rank and firmly secured bonds.

Through composition I equip every battalion

Of letters; the scribes within its ranks are my soldiers.

We seek shelter with our lord, the imam Muhammad,

In a shade stretching over the river of beneficence.

We sail toward beneficence in the ships of hope,

Across seas of gifts whose flood never ebbs.

Who will carry a message from me to the provinces,

Far-reaching in truth and faithful to its promise,

Bearing witness to what his Lord granted the caliph:

Keys of conquest brought by the driver of good fortune?

Take this fragrant breath from the garden of praises,

Surpassing incense when the gathering assembles:

A praise to which musk, when its scent spreads, says:

What a fragrance you are! Have you any peer?

Even water, clarified in the sky of clouds,

Is not purer in essence than you in the cradle's shelter.

How much more now, when ornaments have adorned you in flocks,

And the eminent glory in you as a peerless master!

Nor is the shade in a smiling blossom's mouth

Purer or more fragrant than my praise and my love.

Nor is the full moon, crowned with its perfection,

More dazzling than my love, or farther-traveling than my praise.

May you endure, Ibn Khaldun, an imam of guidance,

And remain in this world within the Garden of Eternity.
