    من دون مرقبِهِ النجومُ الطُلَّعُ

    Yours in the caliphate is an eminence none can overtop;

    The rising stars lie beneath its lookout.

    O king whose days are

    radiant blazes on Time's face, never veiled.

    Glory to Him who adorned you with pleasing character,

    and clothed you in a robe of it, never cast off.

    As for wine, may you ever make its sun rise

    among full moons, while the sun of your face shines.

    فالطيبُ من نفحاتها يَتَضَوْعُ

    You have freed me from need of it with the wine of eloquence;

    for perfume wafts from its fragrant breaths.

    طاب الجنى منها ولذّ المشْرَعُ

    A garden of your verse's splendor has given me lodging;

    sweet is its fruit, and delightful its watering place.

    فالنور من قسماتها يتطلعُ

    And in the depths of darkness you showed me a radiant face;

    so light shines forth from its features.

    The shining full moon bows to it, though it has risen high,

    and the full moon is a crown inlaid with stars.

    You first addressed me with five of its maidens,

    to shield them from every scorching eye.

    I kissed them a thousand times, and for their master spent the night

    praying for him until morning and humbly imploring.
