By God, O you with a branch's slender stature,

and you who put the sun and moon to shame,

you who command beauty within hearts,

and strengthened your glance with dark-eyed grace.

Whoever is not gentle by nature

does not know the pleasure of youth.

For many a free man has become a slave,

possessed by a breath of the east wind,

intoxicated, though he has drunk no wine,

    but has yearned for beauty.

Thus he tormented his heart with pounding,

and delighted his eye with gazing,

and spent the night with tears pouring down,

    striking sparks from his heart.

I marveled at my tormented heart:

it flutters whenever the winds blow.

If the lovelorn one had what he wished for,

he would fly in longing to the valley plains.

And if the grove's nightingale sings,

it keeps me awake all night until dawn.

May you, if you visit, O my healer,

as a dream-vision in a slumber before dawn,

    make sleep my portion,

and shield my eye from sleeplessness.

How many a young gazelle that brought me doom

has settled in the heart's spring pasture!

It draws swords from its glance,

so the heart, in terror, has found no rest.

    أَحِنُّ للأِلْفِ والسَّكَنْ

    I was made affectionate by nature;

I yearn for my companion and my home.

Granada is the dwelling of the beloved,

and nearness to her is my wish and desire.

    فلا عَدَا رَبْعَها المَطَرْ

    She dazzles with her wondrous appearance;

so may rain never pass her dwelling by.

A bride whose crown is al-Sabika,

and whose flowers are her jewelry and robes.

    بحُسْنِها يُضرَبُ المَثَلْ

    She has accepted no rival in her glory;

    her beauty is proverbial.

May God uphold her, queen that she is,

the noblest of dynasties rules her,

under the reign of the awe-inspiring one in whom hopes rest,

    the pure and radiant king.

She struts proudly in her splendid mantle,

in a robe of blossoms and flowers.

    مرآتُها صفحةُ الغديرْ

    Her throne is the Generalife garden;

    her mirror is the surface of the pool;

and dewdrop jewels serve as earrings,

    the Almighty's handiwork governs her.

And delight within her has many forms:

    from cooing and from roaring.

How many collars the flowers have torn open!

And they have crowned the branches with pearls.

So the branch is like a playful, budding maiden,

and the birds sing without a string.

Victory's feasts are held in celebration,

and the joy of the faith of guidance is renewed.

Her sultan wields the lofty lances:

    Muhammad, the victorious, the fortunate;

and he puts the full moon to shame in perfection,

her sultan, the chosen, the peerless.

The lord most forgiving of sins,

the most generous pardoner when he has power,

and a sun of guidance that never sets,

and a sea of bounty that never ebbs.

My lord, O you who fasten the banners,

beneath which the radiant faces are shaded,

you left desolate, O choicest of creation,

    Granada, the halo of generosity.

You set out with good fortune and happy auspices,

and returned with conquest and success.

O you whose heart is inspired to know the unseen,

and who are nourished on victory and triumph,

may God soon let you hear:

    "May safety attend your journey!"
