    If days returned after departing,

the days would not kindle the memory of a beloved.

And everyone who sleeps in the night of youth

is awakened by time with the dawn of gray hair.

O rider of helplessness, will you not rise?

Time has indeed made your dwelling places cramped.

Do not think that youth is a garden

where you sleep beneath the shadows' shade.

For life is sleep, and death awakening,

and a person between them is like a phantom.

And life has already passed as clouds pass,

and the meeting with God is close at hand.

Yet you are deceived by the mirage's gleam,

taking it for water, with no seepage.

By God, the universe, with all it holds,

is nothing but shadows that delude the heedless.

And a shadow's habit, when it stands full,

is that you see it shifting and vanishing.

Indeed, we are bound for God, slaves of desire,

having known neither truth nor falsehood.

So everyone who hopes in anyone but God has failed,

and triumph belongs only to a repentant servant,

who faces the return with sincere repentance

and remains mindful of God, the Witness, the Near.

Alas for me! Youth has passed and ended,

and gray hair has come, following its trail.

Oh, my shame! The man has already been brought low,

and nothing remains of experience but its tale.

And would that, in the past, I had been

storing provisions for the long journey.

The time has come to return from the caravan of feigned youth,

and the scout of right guidance has long been absent.

O you whose heart is born blind beneath the veil's haze,

how often I call you, yet you do not respond!

Are provisions carried to the abode of the Generous One,

when Mustafa, the guide, is an intercessor whose plea is heeded?

For his standing is the treasure of the penniless poor,

and love for him is my provision—what excellent supplies!

And God named him the Compassionate, the Merciful,

so his protected neighbor is never forsaken.

May the people's intercessor on the Day of Reckoning,

and creation's refuge for dispelling sorrows,

grant me his acceptance in answer to my plea,

interceding for me concerning sins that bring ruin.

O Mustafa, while creation was hostage to nonbeing

and the universe had not opened the bud-sheaths of existence,

you were granted a distinction in eternity past,

by which you hold preeminence over every prophet.

Your inscribed birth, when it appeared,

fulfilled for the community the promise of good fortune.

I called out—if only I might be permitted an answer—

to the month of Rabiʿ: 'O springtime of hearts,

you brought forth for guidance, without a veil,

a sun, but one that never sets.'
