أَتعطشُ أولادي وأنت غمامة

أَتعطشُ أولادي وأنت غمامة

تعم جميع الخلق بالنفع والسقيا

تعم جميع الخلق بالنفع والسقيا

Must my children thirst while you are a cloud

My children thirst while you are a cloud

that brings benefit and water to all creation?

Shading all creation with benefit and drink

وتُظلم أوقاتي ووجهك نيّرٌ

وتُظلم أوقاتي ووجهك نيّرٌ

تفيض به الأنوار للدين والدنيا

تفيض به الأنوار للدين والدنيا

And must my days grow dark while your face is radiant,

Yet you darken my times though your face shines

from which light pours forth for faith and worldly life?

Spilling light on religion and worldly life

وجَدُّك قد سماك ربُّك باسمه

وجَدُّك قد سماك ربُّك باسمه

وأورثك الرحمنُ رتبته العليا

وأورثك الرحمنُ رتبته العليا

And your Lord has named you after your grandfather,

Your excellence named you by His name

and the All-Merciful has made you heir to his exalted rank.

And the Merciful granted you highest rank

وقد كان أعطاني الذي أنا سائلٌ

وقد كان أعطاني الذي أنا سائلٌ

وسوَّغني من غيرِ شرط ولا ثُنيا

وسوَّغني من غيرِ شرط ولا ثُنيا

And he had already given me what I am asking for,

He who I ask already granted me

and granted it to me without condition or exception.

Validating me without condition or bend

وشعريَ في غرِّ المصانع خالدٌ

وشعريَ في غرِّ المصانع خالدٌ

يحييه عني في الممات وفي المحْيَا

يحييه عني في الممات وفي المحْيَا

And my poetry is immortal in the resplendent palaces;

My poetry in the bosom of gifts lives on

it keeps him alive on my behalf, in death and in life.

Reviving through me in death and life

وما زلتُ أُهدي المدح مِسكاً مُفَتّقاً

وما زلتُ أُهدي المدح مِسكاً مُفَتّقاً

فتحمله الأرواحُ عاطرة الرَّيَّا

فتحمله الأرواحُ عاطرة الرَّيَّا

And I have never ceased to offer praise as unsealed musk,

I gift eulogies like aromatic musk

so the winds carry it, fragrant with its scent.

That spirits bear perfumed and fresh

وقد أكثر العبدُ التشكّي وإنه

وقد أكثر العبدُ التشكّي وإنه

وحقك يا فخر الملوك قد استحيا

وحقك يا فخر الملوك قد استحيا

And the servant has complained much, and indeed he—

O Pride of Kings, I excessively complain

by your honor, O pride of kings—has grown ashamed.

Yet by right, my lord, I'm too shy

وما الجود إلا ميِّتٌ غير أنه

وما الجود إلا ميِّتٌ غير أنه

إذا نفحت يُمناك في روحه يحيا

إذا نفحت يُمناك في روحه يحيا

And generosity is but a dead thing, save that

Generosity is lifeless unless

when your right hand breathes into its spirit, it lives.

Your right hand's breath in its soul gives life

فمن شاء أن يدعو لدين محمد

فمن شاء أن يدعو لدين محمد

فيدعو لمولانا الخليفة بالبُقُيا

فيدعو لمولانا الخليفة بالبُقُيا

So whoever wishes to pray for Muhammad's faith,

So let whoever wills Muhammad's religion thrive

let him pray for long life for our lord the caliph.

Invoke our Caliph with eternal life
