Leave me, for I am well versed in eminence.

I journey, for the radiant stars journey.

How often have I spent the night traversing its length in pursuit of glory,

As though I were an envoy to a star in the sky.

With a resolve that, whenever night extends its canopy,

Charges against its darkness and brings light.

A man enamored of glory, not enticed

By a soft bed when darkness falls.

If ever he folds his flank around a secret,

It will not be unfolded before death.

And though I am one whose neighbor is inviolable,

Eyes and lips surely take my heart captive.

No lassitude overtakes me in the pursuit of glory,

Until I see a glance touched by languor.

Among the herd from Najd, I fell in love with a gazelle,

Who assails our minds and makes her raids.

She withholds even easy words from a rightly guided man,

And begrudges even a visit from her phantom.

O dwellers of Najd—may streaming rain water it—

Love for you ranges through my heart's uplands and lowlands.

And O dweller on the solitary sandy tract in Mina,

Even a small share of your favor is much.

I remembered you upon the sea, with distance between us,

And oceans of overflowing tears swelled it.

And lightning flashed, its crest aflutter,

Then a moan and a deep sigh bore my heart away.

My heart flutters whenever the east wind blows.

Has my heart no helper in loving you?

And by God, I do not know whether remembering you stirred me,

Or the cup passing round among the tents.

Who, then, will tell separation on my behalf what will grieve it—

For parting wields an oppressive, unjust rule—

That tomorrow, or the day after, we shall meet,

And come evening, one of us will visit, the other be visited?

How long shall I find myself speaking in hints, while my passion speaks plainly,

And hide the name of one I love, though he is renowned?

O champion of my hopes, who raises the price of my unsold wares,

And source of my standing—there is much to say.

Shall I forget? I never forget your gatherings, where

    Radiance and joy greet me.

We visit you beneath the wing of darkness, then turn back,

With a light from your conversation before us.

Yet if I have been absent from you, never absent are

Your kindnesses, unveiled and never hidden.

We go out evening and morning each day, while they

Come to us continually, at evening and early morning.

For your shade spreads wide above me wherever I am,

And the spring of my hopes with you is sweet and pure.

And pardon me, for if I have spoken long, it is only that

My utmost effort, after all this eloquence, still falls short.

And pardon me, for if I have spoken long, it is only that

My utmost effort, after all this eloquence, still falls short.
