Your shades are dewy, and your watering place is sweet.
Your shadows give comfort and your spring is sweet
Yet you consent that I should pass the day with salt water for my drink?
You are pleased that I spend my mornings, though with salt my drink may be

And you—how great you are!—are clouds of mercy,
You are clouds of mercy, blowing as you list
They pour down rain, and the hopes of supplicants yearn toward them.
Gentle dreams are lulled asleep by you

Pour forth upon us, and graciously wait for us,
Rain down on us, look on us with your grace
So we may draw a light that neither fails nor fades.
That we may kindle lights that never fail or hide away

I grew accustomed to love until I found comfort in its tyranny,
I've loved so long that I forget the pain it brings
So every torment that befell me in love is sweet.
Each torment in this love is sweet to me
وقلتand I said لجسميto my body إنهindeed it is ثوبكyour garment الضنىwasting sickness
وقلتand I said لقلبيto my heart إنهindeed it is إلفكyour intimate companion الحبُّlove
And I said to my body, 'Indeed, wasting sickness is your garment';
I say to my body, the cloth of care you wear
And I said to my heart, 'Indeed, love is your companion.'
I say to my heart, is love that you know

And they said, 'He has fallen in love, though gray hair's dawn has broken.'
They said, “Your youth is past, the morn of old age gleams”
So I said, 'I am enamored of fair ones like the morning.'
I said, with whiteness like the dawn, yet I hope on

I plundered the clan's maidens on the night they were displayed,
I stole the loveliness of life on the night it bloomed
And shooting stars from among them had been unveiled to their beholder.
Though from my eyes, the veil was lifted up
ولمand did not أرَI see منهاof them غيرother than رجعthe echo حديثهاof their speech

And I saw nothing of them but the echo of their speech,
I saw in it naught but the words it spoke
So the eye does not know of them what the heart knows.
So to my eyes it was strange, but known unto my heart

Arabian thoroughbreds: when they gallop on the course of eloquence,
A people, when with talk of eloquence they speak
The Arabs fall short of catching up with them.
The eloquent themselves fall short of their pace

And if I transmit them between Najd and Hajir,
If I assign the speech 'twixt Hajar and Nejd
The reciters of the East say, 'Oh, how splendid is the West!'
The scholars of the East will say, “The West is best!”
فمنعةso a protection صدقtrue للخلافةfor the caliphate قدindeed ضَفَتْhas spread amply

So the caliphate's true protection has spread
By truth of lineage for the Caliphate made fit
Over him whom veils of his own majesty enclose.
Veiled in awe, enthroned in majesty

And a gleaming sky that the east wind's hand has burnished—
Like polished Indian steel the sheen our Caliph has
The steed of the gaze journeys through it and never stumbles.
A glance can travel over it, no flaw in it seen

But for that which takes precedence over obedience to passion,
If not for one, obedience to desire she claimed
Ewers and drinking companions would have thronged around me there.
Goblets and wine for her around me would have spun

But gray hair forbade me to approach love,
But old age warned, come not too close to love
If nearness to those I love is not granted me.
If readily love's presence is not given

فجانبكمfor your manner سهلٌgentle ومنزلكمand your dwelling رَحْبُspacious
So do not delay the debt owed to one fed on promises, when you have ample means,
Demand no payment for a gift of bounty made
For your manner is gentle, and your dwelling spacious.
For at your side the plain is smooth, the dwelling wide

And if, in your pride, you do not deem me their match,
If you see me not equal to such high regard
And a grave affair has kept you from seeking her hand,
And better marriage claims your purpose stayed

For my lord has already presented the chief with a noble maiden,
God grant the Chief Commander find a bride
Fresh pearls from her words crown her.
Whose perfect words are strung with pearls still moist

She passed round cups of the wine of longing,
She pours the wine as camphor mixes with pure cold
As tawny wine mingles with cool, sweet water.

You would have faced reproach from me over my request.

وحسبُكمand enough for you الفخرglory العميمall-encompassing بهthrough him حَسْبُenough
O secretaries of our lord, the caliph Ahmad,
And pride enough in ties to him for any man
And the all-encompassing glory you gain through him is enough for you—enough!
Through him the best of literature is spread
بهthrough him اعتزَّتِgained strength الآدابliterature وامتدَّand lengthened باعُهاits arm-span
وطالتand grew long يداهاits two hands واستحقَّand became deserved بهاon its account العُجْبُself-admiration
Through him, literature gained strength, and its arm-span lengthened;
Its ways increased in width and merit both
And its hands grew long, and pride in it was justified.
And wonder at its works is justified
فلوfor if لمnot يكنwere بالفضلthrough merit تنفُقَflourishes سوقُهاits market
لكانthen it would be يُقالsaid التَّبْرunminted gold فيin أرضهhis land تُربُdust
For if its market did not flourish through merit,
If merit were not paid its due of praise
Then it would be said, 'Gold in his land is dust.'
Then every land would say, “In dust, no worth.”
بقيتُمmay you remain بهthrough him فيin ظلِّthe shade جاءِprestige وغبطةٍand bliss

May you remain through him in the shade of honor and bliss,
Through him you stand in lasting joy and bliss
As fine-bred camels trot to meet your noble one.
To you, the noble one, my wish that I might come
