Praise be to God, the Bountiful, the Generous,

The Giver, the Benefactor, bestowing every delight.

And I seek forgiveness from God, the Forgiving, the Merciful,

For every sin, recent or old.

O my wayward heart, will you not become upright,

So that you may come to God with a sound heart?

Do you not see death, dreadful and appalling,

Overtaking the distant, kin, and close friends?

And let not your health deceive you—how many a youth

Was healthy in the morning, then ill by evening,

And, days later, met his end,

Either to Paradise or to Hell.

And beware of death, and be apprehensive

Of it—a brother to sorrow, dejected, holding back grief.

May, oh may, the All-Merciful forgive me,

And may the Generous One not call me to account for my deeds.

For I have no deliverer save His grace.

He suffices, He suffices—the Bountiful, the Generous suffices.

How often He has bestowed on me bounty that

Had never crossed my mind, O companion!

I hope in my God, and hope in Him is for me

My reserve, my treasure, my safeguard and constant companion.

Then blessings and peace be upon

The one God singled out for the exalted station,

And upon his family and companions, as long as songs are sung

By birds at eventide or in the dark of night.
