يا طالب السكنى بوادي الأحقاف
اسمعhear وصيهcounsel للحبيبof Habib سقافSaqqaf
اسمع وصيه للحبيب سقاف
O seeker of a dwelling in the valley of al-Ahqaf,
O seeker of dwelling in the valley of Al-Ahqaf
Hear the counsel of Habib Saqqaf.
Listen to the advice of the beloved friend Saqaf
يوصيhe counsels لأولادto sons كرامnoble أشرافhigh-born
يوصي لأولاد كرام أشراف
فقالand he said قولاwords فيهin which عدلjustice وإنصافand fairness
فقال قولا فيه عدل وإنصاف
He counsels noble, high-born sons,
He advises the honorable noble sons
And he spoke words of justice and fairness:
He spoke words of justice and fairness
ارمواcast away بهذهthis منfrom وراbeyond جبلMount قافQaf
ارموا بهذه من ورا جبل قاف
يعنيhe means الولايةadministrative authority للقضاover the judiciary والأوقافand endowments
يعني الولاية للقضا والأوقاف
Cast this away beyond Mount Qaf.
Throw this behind the mountain of Qaf
He means authority over the courts and endowments,
Meaning leave governance to judges and endowments
لأنbecause فيهاin it كمhow many حرجhardships واخوافand fears
لأن فيها كم حرج واخواف
فخفso fear الهكyour God يدرككHe will come to your aid بالطافwith gentle favors
فخف الهك يدركك بالطاف
For it holds so many hardships and fears.
For there is much hardship and fears in it
So fear your God; He will come to your aid with gentle favors.
So lighten your burden, and He will reach you with goodness
وجنتانand two gardens ياO فتىyouth لمنfor whoever خافfears
وجنتان يا فتى لمن خاف
واعرفand understand زمانكyour times واجتنبand shun اللاعوافthe unruly (uncertain term)
واعرف زمانك واجتنب اللاعواف
And two gardens, O youth, are for whoever fears.
And two gardens, O youth, for he who fears
And understand your times, and shun the unruly,
And know your time and avoid the unruly
المظهرينthose displaying الكبرpride والتعجرافand arrogance
المظهرين الكبر والتعجراف
الظالمينthe oppressors بالفعلthrough deeds والتخوافand intimidation
الظالمين بالفعل والتخواف
Those who flaunt pride and arrogance,
Those showing arrogance and boastfulness
Who oppress through deeds and intimidation.
The oppressors in action and intimidation
يؤذونthey harm للمسلمthe Muslim بحيفwith injustice واحجافand oppression
يؤذون للمسلم بحيف واحجاف
اللهGod يكفيwards off شرهمtheir evil وهوand He كافis sufficient
الله يكفي شرهم وهو كاف
They harm the Muslim through injustice and oppression.
They harm the Muslim unjustly and defiantly
God wards off their evil, and He suffices.
May Allah suffice us from their evil, and He is sufficient
كمhow often كفHe warded off عناfrom us كفthe hand of حاسدan envier حافbarefoot
كم كف عنا كف حاسد حاف
ياO ربناour Lord استرناcover us بستركwith Your covering الضافample
يا ربنا استرنا بسترك الضاف
How often He has kept a barefoot envier's hand away from us!
How many harms of an envious opponent He has sufficed
O our Lord, veil us with Your ample covering,
Our Lord, cover us with Your perfect cover
وهبand grant لناto us منfrom محضpure فضلكYour bounty الوافabundant
وهب لنا من محض فضلك الواف
فضلاa favor عظيماgreat فيهin which كلevery اتحافgracious gift
فضلا عظيما فيه كل اتحاف
And grant us, from Your pure, abundant bounty,
And grant us purely from Your fulfilling grace
A great favor containing every gracious gift,
An abundant grace, comprising all that is fine
يصلحis set right بهthrough it الظاهرthe outward ويصلحand is set right الخافthe hidden
يصلح به الظاهر ويصلح الخاف
يمسيreaches evening فؤاديmy heart منof كدورتهits murkiness صافclear
يمسي فؤادي من كدورته صاف
Through which the outward is set right, and the hidden is set right;
That reforms the apparent and reforms the unseen
My heart ends the day clear of its murk.
My heart becomes clear of its anguish and turmoil
