يا محمد إذا شيت الهنا والمبره

يا محمد إذا شيت الهنا والمبره

والسلامة وتكفي من جميع المضره

والسلامة وتكفي من جميع المضره

O Muhammad, if you wish for happiness and goodness,

O Muhammad, if you desire safety and goodness

and safety, and to be spared from every harm,

And wellbeing and protection from all harm

اترك الرسم والعادات والخلق مره

اترك الرسم والعادات والخلق مره

جامل الوقت لا تبحث على الوقت شره

جامل الوقت لا تبحث على الوقت شره

leave conventions, habits, and people altogether.

Leave vain habits and customs once

Humor the times; do not seek grounds to reproach them.

Make the most of time, do not seek evil in time

سالم الناس تسلم إن لي بعض خبره

سالم الناس تسلم إن لي بعض خبره

لا تزاحم تكن شارد وهي ظرف خبره

لا تزاحم تكن شارد وهي ظرف خبره

Make peace with people and you will be safe; indeed, I have some experience.

Be at peace with people and you will be safe, for I have some experience

Do not jostle, lest you become a wanderer; this is a vessel of experience.

Do not contend, be detached as circumstance reports

واطلب العلم واعمل به تنال المبره

واطلب العلم واعمل به تنال المبره

عند ربك وكن طايع لنهيه وأمره

عند ربك وكن طايع لنهيه وأمره

Seek knowledge and act upon it; you will gain favor

And seek knowledge and act upon it to gain goodness

with your Lord; be obedient to His prohibitions and His commands.

From your Lord and be obedient to His prohibitions and command

واشكر الله إذا سبل على الكل ستره

واشكر الله إذا سبل على الكل ستره

عم جوده تعالى المسلمين وكفره

عم جوده تعالى المسلمين وكفره

And thank God when He drapes His veil over everyone.

And thank Allah when He has covered the faults of all

His bounty—exalted is He—embraces Muslims and unbelievers.

His might encompasses all, His coercion envelops all

كلهم تحت حكمه كلهم تحت قهره

كلهم تحت حكمه كلهم تحت قهره

ما لحد شيء معه مثقال أووزن ذره

ما لحد شيء معه مثقال أووزن ذره

All are under His rule; all are under His overpowering might.

None have anything with Him, not an atom's weight or a speck

No one has anything beside Him—not a speck's measure or weight.

So take Him as your companion in evening and morrow

فاتخذه جليسك في مسأ وبكره

فاتخذه جليسك في مسأ وبكره

واعتكف تحت بابه على تلحقك نظره

واعتكف تحت بابه على تلحقك نظره

So take Him as your companion, evening and morning.

And seclude yourself at His door so that you meet His gaze

And remain in devotion beneath His door, hoping that a glance may reach you.

You will attain your hopes and desires without hardship

تبلغ السول والمأمول من غير عسره

تبلغ السول والمأمول من غير عسره

والخمول الخمول احذر ظهور أو شهره

والخمول الخمول احذر ظهور أو شهره

You will attain your desire and what you hope for, without hardship.

And beware laziness and its prominence or fame

And obscurity, obscurity! Beware of prominence or fame.

And withdraw and detach without pride or arrogance

واعتزل وانفرد من غير عجب وكبره

واعتزل وانفرد من غير عجب وكبره

لا تخالط تنالك كل ظلمه وكدره

لا تخالط تنالك كل ظلمه وكدره

Withdraw and be alone, without self-admiration or pride.

Do not socialize or you will meet with injustice and gloom

Do not mingle, lest all darkness and murk befall you.

And occupy yourself with what benefits you, learn and understand it

واشتغل بالذي يعنيك فاعلمه وادره

واشتغل بالذي يعنيك فاعلمه وادره

لا تعرج على غيره تصيبك معره

لا تعرج على غيره تصيبك معره

Occupy yourself with what concerns you; learn it and understand it.

Do not digress to others or you will meet disgrace

Do not turn aside to anything else, lest disgrace befall you.

And strive in deed, word and thought

واجتهد في العمل قولا وفعلا وفكره

واجتهد في العمل قولا وفعلا وفكره

لا تكاسل ولا تلحقك في الخير فتره

لا تكاسل ولا تلحقك في الخير فتره

And strive in your work, in word, deed, and thought.

Do not be lazy or miss out on virtue in a period

Do not be lazy, and let no slackening overtake you in doing good.

And follow the way of the Guide in ease and unease

واتبع سنة الهادي بعسره ويسره

واتبع سنة الهادي بعسره ويسره

لا تخالفه في شيء بسره وجهره

لا تخالفه في شيء بسره وجهره

And follow the Guide's way, in its hardship and its ease.

Do not oppose Him in anything, in secret or openly

Do not oppose him in anything, whether hidden or open.

Bless my Lord upon him as long as a branch sways

صل ربي عليه ما انثنى غصن شجره

صل ربي عليه ما انثنى غصن شجره

أو سرى الركب في الداجى يؤمون قبره

أو سرى الركب في الداجى يؤمون قبره

Bless him, my Lord, whenever a tree's branch bends,

Or a rider travels in the night, seeking his tomb

or the caravan travels by night through the darkness, bound for his grave.
