Those who were the earth's safeguard while they lived have died.
Those who were the safety of earth when alive, have died
As long as they remained to serve religion, religion was kept safe.
They did not remain for the religion, so the religion is protected

If the Lord remembers them when they are seen
Mercy descends at their mention whenever people tell of them.
His remembrance of them brings down mercy when spoken of

Would that I were with them or near them when they supplicate
Fortunate is whoever is passionately in love with them, enraptured and enthralled.
Blessed is he who is with them, enraptured with his Master

Heirs of the prophets in knowledge stored up and hidden.
Inheritors of the prophets in stored, concealed knowledge
For us, love for them is obligatory, not a recommended voluntary act.
Loving them with us is obligatory, not optional supererogatory

They benefit humankind in everything; they do no harm.
They benefit the world in everything, they do no harm

Do you see us seeing them, or pleased with us one day?

I do not think so, even if I did I would be mad
How could they be pleased with those whose lives have passed in disobedience?
How would they be pleased when we passed our lives disobeying?

Their lives have passed in heedlessness; they pray absentmindedly.
Our lives passed in heedlessness, praying forgetfully
Our Lord, turn to us in mercy; indeed, I have come sorrowful.
Our Lord turn to us, I have come feeling regret
