Ibn Hashim says: A letter reached me,

Ibn Hashim says: A letter has reached me,

cast in verse, lucid in meaning.

Composed in verse, clear in its meanings.

فيه الطرب فيه العجيب العجاب

فيه الطرب فيه العجيب العجاب

انعش لجسمي مع جناني

انعش لجسمي مع جناني

In it is delight; in it, a wonder of wonders.

In it is delight; in it are wonders beyond wonder.

It revived my body together with my soul.

It revived my body along with my heart.

نظم الولد لازال على الجناب

نظم الولد لازال على الجناب

محفوظ من كل ران

محفوظ من كل ران

The young man’s verse—may he ever remain at the exalted threshold,

The son's composition—may he ever remain in honor,

shielded from every stain.

Protected from every stain.

ووالده أنسي ولب اللباب

ووالده أنسي ولب اللباب

نسيج وقته والزمان

نسيج وقته والزمان

And his father is my intimate friend, the very essence of the elect,

And his father is my solace and the essence of essences,

the peerless man of his age and time.

Peerless in his age and time.

لا زال يرقى في العلوم الرحاب

لا زال يرقى في العلوم الرحاب

ونفع للقاصي ودان

ونفع للقاصي ودان

May he continue to rise through the spacious realms of learning,

May he ever rise in the vast fields of knowledge,

benefiting those far away and near.

And be of benefit to those far and near.

يارب يسر له جميع المحاب

يارب يسر له جميع المحاب

وهب له فوق الأماني

وهب له فوق الأماني

O Lord, make easy for him all that he desires,

O Lord, make easy for him all that he loves,

and grant him more than his hopes.

And grant him more than he wishes for.

قف يامحمد تحته بالركاب

قف يامحمد تحته بالركاب

لا تشتغل عنه بثاني

لا تشتغل عنه بثاني

Stand beneath him, Muhammad, holding the stirrup;

Stand, O Muhammad, beneath him at the stirrups;

let no one else distract you from him.

Do not be distracted from him by another.

وما يقوله فهو عين الصواب

وما يقوله فهو عين الصواب

فاتبع وإياك التواني

فاتبع وإياك التواني

Whatever he says is the very essence of truth,

And what he says is exactly right;

so follow him, and beware of indolence.

So follow him, and beware of slackness.

هذه نصيحة من محب لحاب

هذه نصيحة من محب لحاب

خذها ولا تصغي لشاني

خذها ولا تصغي لشاني

This is counsel from one lover to another;

This is counsel from a loving friend to another loving friend;

take it, and do not heed my detractor.

Take it, and do not heed a hater.

ويحصل المطلوب من كل باب

ويحصل المطلوب من كل باب

في ذه وفي تلك الجنان

في ذه وفي تلك الجنان

And the sought-for goal is attained through every door,

And what is sought will be attained through every door,

in this world and in that other—the Gardens.

In this world and in those gardens of Paradise.

واحفظ إلهي لي جميع الصحاب

واحفظ إلهي لي جميع الصحاب

بجاه سيدنا اليماني

بجاه سيدنا اليماني

And, my God, preserve for me all my companions,

And protect all my companions for me, O my God,

by the rank of our Yemeni master.

By the standing of our master, the Yemeni.

صلى عليه الله منشى السحاب

صلى عليه الله منشى السحاب

ماناح قمري فوق بان

ماناح قمري فوق بان

May God, the Bringer-forth of the clouds, bless him

May God, the Maker of the clouds, bless him,

whenever a dove laments above a ben-tree bough,

As long as a turtledove calls mournfully above a bān tree,

وآله وصحبه والذي قد أناب

وآله وصحبه والذي قد أناب

لله محسن للحسان

لله محسن للحسان

and bless his family, his companions, and whoever has turned

And his family and his companions, and whoever has turned

to God, doing good to Ḥassān—or to the fair.

To God, showing kindness to the good.

والحمدلله على ما أثاب

والحمدلله على ما أثاب

من فضله والإمتنان

من فضله والإمتنان

And praise be to God for every reward He has granted

And praise be to God for what He has given in reward,

from His bounty and gracious favor.
