The letter arrived, in rhymed prose and carefully composed,

    well-crafted, well-ordered, and finely adorned.

And how could it not, when it came from a master

from whom the sciences and their branches gush forth?

That is al-Husayn, whose ancestral roots reach back to al-Husayn.

How fine he is—what a most illustrious nobleman!

How noble he is, and his clan and his house!

A great house, pure and purified.

O Husayn, do not forget your brother, for he is

hard-hearted and forgetful, sinful and remiss.

So show him kindness with an accepted prayer

that saves him from what he dreads and fears.

And when you stand at the sacred stations, remember

a distant servant, and intercede for me; you will be rewarded.

Indeed, when the generous have an ample share,

they show kindness with it, give alms, and do good.

How much more toward those bound to them by love and brotherhood!

So be gracious, show mercy, and ask forgiveness

for the one who loves you, your poor and needy one.

So pray, persist, my masters; do not grow weary.

And when you see my Lord’s House, seek

pardon for one who grieves at his distance from it.

Do not be heedless, my masters; do not be heedless.

Come, remember me in prayer; come, remember!

Do not falter, do not grow weary, do not be idle.

Do not neglect; do not deprive the one who looks on expectantly.

Far be it from you to hide things away for yourselves,

or amass treasure, or be miserly, or hoard.

Indeed, though I am remiss, sorrow

is my state and condition; nothing can contain it.

O our Lord, O our Lord, O Lord of sublimity,

O Giver of gifts, Lord of generosity, O All-Powerful,

we ask You for bounty, vast and continuous,

a great abundance beyond what any heart imagines.

Not through effort—no, no; indeed, no, no—

only as a gracious gift, pure bounty raining down.

And grant a good ending, O my God, when

death draws near and the wrenching out of the soul looms.

Then blessings and peace upon him who

intercedes for us on the Day of Recompense, when we are gathered,

and upon his noble Companions and his family,

and upon whoever follows in their footsteps.
