راحت الراحات أجمع

ما بقى إلا الخمول

All comforts have departed;

Nothing remains but obscurity,

وانفراد واعتزال

وانزواء وذبول

And solitude and seclusion,

And withdrawal and withering.

واشتغل بالدين جهدك

ما سوى هذا فضول

And devote yourself to religion with all your strength;

Anything other than this is superfluous.

هكذا جاءت نصوص

هكذا جاءت نقول

Thus have the texts come down;

Thus have the reports come down.

وأتت آثار جمه

وكذا الشارع يقول

And many traditions have come down,

And thus the Lawgiver says:

إن ترى شحا مطاعا

وهوى فيهم يصول

If you see avarice obeyed,

And passion rampaging among them,

وترى كلا برأيه

معجبا به لا يحول

And you see each person with his own opinion,

Enamored of it, never turning away,

فاشتغل عنهم بنفسك

وبمن منهم تعول

Then turn from them and attend to yourself,

And to those among them whom you support.

ودع الغير عنهم بنفسك

لا تقل كيف يقول

And leave the others, keeping yourself apart from them;

Do not say, 'How does he speak?'
