أحمد السقاف إن شئت الوصال

والظفر بالسول حالا ومآل

Ahmad al-Saqqaf, if you desire union

And attainment of your wish, now and in the end,

أحمد الله مدى الدهر على

كل ما تلقاه من مر وحال

Praise God throughout all time for

Everything you encounter, bitter or sweet.

واعلم أن الخير كله في الرضا

والسخط هو في السخط شر الخصال

And know that all good lies in contentment,

And discontent—in discontent lies the worst of traits.

واتق الله ففي التقوى خبي

كل خير وهي مطلوب الرجال

And fear God, for within piety lies hidden

Every good; it is what men seek.

واطلب العلم ففي العلم الهدى

وبه تنقذ من كل ضلال

And seek knowledge, for in knowledge lies guidance,

And through it you are saved from every error.

نعمك الخل الذي ما مثله

يهدي الخل إلى خير الخلال

A fine friend for you, without an equal,

Guiding a friend to the finest virtues.

واعملن بالعلم تدعى عالما

وبه تسعد وترقى للكمال

And act upon knowledge, and you will be called learned;

And through it you prosper and ascend to perfection.

ثمرات العلم أعمال التقى

إن عدمها فهو حجه ووبال

The fruits of knowledge are deeds of piety;

If it lacks them, it is evidence against you and a bane.

واحذر الكبر وأخوات له

تحبط الأعمال توجب للنكال

And beware of pride and its sister vices:

They nullify deeds and bring punishment.

واترك الناس ومل عنهم ففي

ذا الزمن فرض عليك الاعتزال

And leave people and turn away from them, for in

This age, withdrawal is incumbent upon you.

لا تخالط يا فتى إلا لما

لا غنى لك عنه من دين ومال

Do not mingle, young man, except for what

You cannot do without in matters of faith and wealth.

واحذر العادات لا تقربها

إنها سم به داء عضال

And beware of habitual ways; do not approach them:

They are poison bearing an incurable disease.

واترك الدنيا فلا تطلبها

غير ستر الحال من مال حلال

And forsake the world; do not seek it

Except to cover your needs with lawful wealth.

واغتنم عمرك من قبل الفنا

واغنم الصحة من قبل الكلال

And make the most of your lifetime before passing away,

And seize your health before weariness.

صحح النية من قبل العمل

إنما النية روح للفعال

Set your intention right before acting:

Intention is indeed the soul of deeds.

واخلص الأعمال لا تقصد سوى

وجه مولانا الكبير المتعال

And make your deeds sincere; aim at nothing but

The face of our Lord, the Great, the Most Exalted.

وتواضع وافن عن كل السوى

واكسب الخير لأيام طوال

And be humble, and efface yourself from all besides Him,

And earn good for long days ahead.

واتبع هدى النبي المصطفى

في اعتقاد وفعال ومقال

And follow the guidance of the Chosen Prophet

In belief, action, and speech.

خذ به واعمل به واسلك به

كل شيء غيره فهو ضلال

Hold fast to it, act by it, and walk by it:

Everything other than it is error.

واصحب الرفق ولا تعدل به

فهو كاللطف به الخير ينال

And keep gentleness as your companion; set nothing equal to it,

For, like kindness, through it good is attained.

واحذر الخرق وما أشبهه

فهو كالعنف مثير للجدال

And beware of roughness and whatever resembles it,

For, like harshness, it provokes dispute.

جالس العقال واعقل عنهم

حكما فاقت على غالي اللآل

Sit with the wise and learn from them

Words of wisdom surpassing precious pearls.

حسن الأخلاق يحيا سالما

ومافى من معاداة الرجال

One of good character lives unharmed,

And spared the hostility of men.

وسع البال وطوله فقد

فاز بالخيرات من بالخلق طال

Be broad-minded and patient, for

Whoever excels in character has won good things.

واعرف الوقت وكن قرما ولا

تهمل الحزم فتنشب في الحبال

And know the times, be a stalwart, and do not

Neglect prudence, lest you become entangled in the ropes.

يكفي الإنسان ما قد ذاقه

أورآه إن يكن صاحب بال

What a person has already tasted suffices him,

Or seen, if he possesses discernment.

واذكر الرحمن يذكرك وفي

ذكره غرس تجده في المآل

And remember the Merciful: He will remember you; and in

His remembrance is a planting you will find at your final return.

وعذاب الله لا انجي لنا

منه من ذكر المهيمن ذي الجلال

And God's punishment—nothing offers us greater deliverance

From it than remembering the Guardian, Possessor of Majesty.

والصلاة خير موضوع أتى

عن رسول الله في اسناد عال

And prayer is the best ordained practice, as reported

From God's Messenger through a high chain of transmission.

واحفظ القول فماكب الورى

في جهنم غير أقوال رذال

And guard your speech: nothing has cast humankind headlong

Into Hell but vile utterances.

فاصمت اسكت لا تقل شيأ سوى

قول خير يرتجي منه نوال

So be silent, keep quiet; say nothing but

A good word from which one hopes for reward.

واذكر الموت عسى تعمل له

عملا ينجيك في يوم السؤال

And remember death, that you may prepare for it

With a deed that saves you on the Day of Questioning.

واقصر الآمال لا تبسطها

إنه آتيك يوما لا محال

And shorten your hopes; do not extend them:

It will come to you one day, with no escape.

واسأل الرحمن دأبا سرمدا

وتذلل في تضرع وابتهال

And ask the Merciful continually, without end,

And humble yourself in supplication and fervent prayer,

وافتقار وانكسار دائما

للعظيم ذي الجلال والجمال

And in neediness and brokenness, always,

Before the Magnificent, Possessor of Majesty and Beauty.

ربنا يا ربنا اغفر ذنبنا

واعف عن أوزارنا الجم الثقال

Our Lord, O our Lord, forgive our sin,

And pardon our many, heavy burdens of sin.

واصلح القلب ليصلح أمرنا

كله دنيا وأخرى بالكمال

And set the heart right, that our affairs may be set right,

All of them, in this world and the next, completely.

إن قلبي قد عراه سقم

ولهى عن طلب الخير ومال

Indeed, sickness has overtaken my heart,

And it has grown heedless of seeking good and turned away.

هب لنا نورا وعقلا كاملا

وافر انبلغ به أعلى المعال

Grant us light and a complete intellect,

Abundant, through which we may reach the loftiest heights.

وقنا الاسوا وجنبنا الهوى

واجعل التقوى غذانا والزلال

And protect us from evil, and keep us away from wayward desire,

And make piety our food and clear water.

رب ثبتنا على دين النبي

خير خلقك أحمد مولى بلال

Lord, make us steadfast in the Prophet's faith,

The best of Your creation, Ahmad, Bilal's patron.

صلوات الله تغشاه وتغشى

النبيين وأصحاب وآل

May God's blessings enfold him, and enfold

The prophets, companions, and family.

وسلام الله في كل نفس

عدد الأنفاس ما دمن الليال

And God's peace with every breath,

As many as the breaths, as long as nights endure.

ولك الحمد إلهي دائما

عدد النعمى وما سرن الجمال

And Yours is praise, my God, forever,

As many as blessings, and as long as camels journey.

وادع لي أحمد عسى أحمد غدا

يوم لاينفع ما أو عيال

And pray for me, Ahmad, that I may be praised tomorrow,

On the day when neither wealth nor dependants avail,

غير من يأتي بقلب طاهر

وسليم هكذا قال تعال

Except one who comes with a heart both pure

And sound—thus spoke the Exalted One.
