وقد نصحتك فانظر لنفسك المسكينه

People are a deep sea, and distance from them is a ship.

People are a deep sea, and distance from them is a ship

I have advised you, so look to your poor self.

And I advised you, so look after your poor self

فقلت تذييلا لهما وإن لم تكن مثلهما

فقلت تذييلا لهما وإن لم تكن مثلهما

فبحرهم شر بجر فيها البلايا كمينه

فبحرهم شر بجر فيها البلايا كمينه

So I spoke in continuation of those two lines, though it was not their equal.

So I said, complementing the two, even if you are not like them

For their sea is the worst of seas, where calamities lie in ambush.

For their sea is an evil that hides afflictions within

به التماسيح جمه وكم أفاعي سمينه

به التماسيح جمه وكم أفاعي سمينه

ففر منهم فرارا

ففر منهم فرارا

In it are many crocodiles—and how many fat vipers!

In it are fierce crocodiles and how many fat snakes

So flee from them—flee!

So flee from them, fleeing

فالبعد حصن حصينه

فالبعد حصن حصينه

فيها اللآلى الغوالي

فيها اللآلى الغوالي

For distance is a secure fortress.

For distance is an impregnable fortress

Within it are precious pearls,

In it are fine thoughts

مع العلوق الثمينه

مع العلوق الثمينه

من كل ذكر وفكر

من كل ذكر وفكر

Together with treasures of great worth,

With valuable sentiments

Of every kind of remembrance and reflection,

From every mention and thought

مع الهدى والسكينه

مع الهدى والسكينه

والرفق مع جملة أشيا

والرفق مع جملة أشيا

Together with guidance and tranquility,

With guidance and tranquility

And gentleness, with a host of things

And kindness with all things

على المعيشه معينه

على المعيشه معينه

وترك عادات سوء

وترك عادات سوء

That help with one's livelihood,

That help sustain life

And abandoning evil habits,

And leaving bad habits

فيها الشر ورد فينه

فيها الشر ورد فينه

وهي بكل بلاء وكل فقر ضمينه

وهي بكل بلاء وكل فقر ضمينه

In which evils lie buried (apparent reading).

In which is evil and rejection

And they guarantee every affliction and every kind of poverty.

And it is laden with every affliction and all poverty

حذار عنها حذار من قبل محنه محينه

حذار عنها حذار من قبل محنه محينه

واسلك سبيلا سويا

واسلك سبيلا سويا

Beware of them—beware—before a deadly ordeal.

Beware of it, beware before an impending ordeal

And follow a straight path,

And take an even path

على الطريق المبينه

على الطريق المبينه

Along the clear road:

On the clear way

A way like no other,

A way not bent
