فَطَرَبتso I was enraptured طَربةthe rapture فاسقa libertine متهتكshameless
فَطَرَبت طَربة فاسق متهتك
وَعَفَفتُand I remained chaste عفةthe chastity ناسكan ascetic مُتَحرجscrupulous about avoiding sin
وَعَفَفتُ عفة ناسك مُتَحرج
So I thrilled with the rapture of a shameless libertine,
I was disturbed with the disturbance of a debauched libertine,
And kept the chastity of a scrupulous ascetic.
And I restrained with the chastity of an ascetic filled with shame,
وَاللَهُand God يَعلمknows كَيفَhow كانَتwas عفَتيmy chastity
وَاللَهُ يَعلم كَيفَ كانَت عفَتي
ماthe space بَينَbetween خلخالan anklet هُناكَthere وَدُand [beginning of دملج, ‘armlet’] ملج[remainder of دملج, ‘armlet’]
ما بَينَ خلخال هُناكَ وَدُ ملج
And God knows what my chastity was like
And God knows how my chastity was
Between an anklet there and an armlet.
Between the anklet there and the cheek stained with tears.
