خَليلي إِني لِلثُريا لحاسد
وَإِنيand indeed I عَلىat رَيبvicissitudes الزَمانof time لَواجدtruly resentful
وَإِني عَلى رَيب الزَمان لَواجد
My two friends, I truly envy the Pleiades,
My beloved, I am jealous of Pleiades
and I am truly resentful of the vicissitudes of time.
Though I despair of time, I still find
أَيَبقىcan it remain? جَميعاًtogether شَملهاits company وَهِيَthough it is سَبعةseven
أَيَبقى جَميعاً شَملها وَهِيَ سَبعة
وَأَفقَدwhile I lose مَنthe one whom أَحببتُهُI loved him وَهُوَthough he is واحدone
وَأَفقَد مَن أَحببتُهُ وَهُوَ واحد
Can its company remain united, though it numbers seven,
Shall seven stars remain forever aligned
while I lose the one I loved, though he is but one?
While I lose the one that my heart has enshrined?
