ما الحُب إِلّا لِلحَبيب الآخر
Forsake the love of the first one whose love ensnared you;
Abandon love for the first one you were enamored of.
love belongs only to the last beloved.
Love belongs only to the later beloved.
ماwhat قَدalready تَوَلىhas passed لاno اِرتِجاعreclaiming لِطيبهof its sweetness
ما قَد تَوَلى لا اِرتِجاع لِطيبه
هَلare? غائبabsent اللذاتpleasures مثلlike الحاضرthose present
هَل غائب اللذات مثل الحاضر
What has passed—its sweetness cannot be recovered.
What has passed—its sweetness cannot be reclaimed.
Is an absent pleasure like one that is present?
Are absent pleasures like those at hand?

أَوفى لَدَيَّ مِن الشَباب الغادر
Gray age, now faithful to its station,
Indeed, gray hair, having faithfully kept its place,
is more faithful to me than treacherous youth.
Is more faithful to me than treacherous youth.

Your world is your today, not yesterday—so take heed:
Your world is today, not yesterday—so take heed:
what is past and lost is not like what remains.
The lost past is not like what remains.
