كُنتُI had اَستَمحتكasked you for a gift فيin قَرابةٍa flask ماءَwater
كُنتُ اَستَمحتك في قَرابةٍ ماءَ
أَباO father of الحُسينal-Husayn أَمor اِستَهديتI requested as a gift صَهباءَtawny wine
أَبا الحُسين أَم اِستَهديت صَهباءَ
Had I asked you for water in a flask,
Abu al-Husayn, or requested tawny wine?
خطبتI sought in marriage جارِيَةًa maiden سَمراءَbrown-skinned قَدalready جَليتshe was unveiled
خطبت جارِيَةً سَمراءَ قَد جَليت
عَليَّbefore me زُفتshe was led as a bride إِليَّto me اليَومtoday بَيضاءَwhite-skinned
عَليَّ زُفت إِليَّ اليَوم بَيضاءَ
I wooed a brown-skinned maiden who had been unveiled
before me; today she was brought to me a white-skinned bride.
فَرطّتyou were negligent فيabout خَتمsealing بُرٍّwheat قَدalready سَمَحَتyou were generous بِهِwith it
فَرطّت في خَتم بُرٍّ قَد سَمَحَت بِهِ
فَدبّرso he contrived اللَصُّthe thief فيهِwith it أَمسِyesterday ماwhatever شاءَhe wished
فَدبّر اللَصُّ فيهِ أَمسِ ما شاءَ
You were careless in sealing the wheat you had freely given,
so yesterday the thief did with it whatever he pleased.
