وَرُقعةand a chessboard كُناwe had رَفَعناهاwe put it away
نَشَرتهاyou spread it out لَماwhen طَويناهاwe folded it up
And a chessboard we had put away—
you spread it out when we had folded it up.
طَمَعتyou hoped ياO أَحمَقfool فيfor قَمرهاwinning at it
لَوif أَمكَنwere possible القَمرwinning at play قَمرناهاwe would have won at it
You hoped, you fool, to win at it;
had winning been possible, we would have won.
فإِنso if أَقاموهاthey set it up فَماthen what ذَنبناour fault
كُناwe had عَلىdespite ذاكَthat نَفضناهاwe shook it clear
So if they set it up, what fault is ours?
We had shaken it clear all the same.
وَاللَهُby God لَوif أَحضَرتُهاI brought to it زيرياZiri
ماnot ميزhe distinguished الفرزانthe vizier وَالشاهاand the king
By God, had I brought Ziri to it,
he would not have distinguished the vizier from the king.
