بِأَبيmy father as ransom مِنthe one whom نعمتI enjoyed myself فيهِwith him بِيَومfor a day
لَمnot يَزَلcease لِلسُرورfor joy فيهِin it نُموُّgrowth
May my father ransom the one with whom I enjoyed a day
in which joy never ceased to grow—
يَومَa day of لَهوmerriment قَدindeed اِلتَقىmet طَرفاهits two ends
فَكَأَنso it was as though العَشيthe evening فيهِin it غَدّوmorning
a day of merriment whose two ends met,
so that its evening seemed like morning,
إِذwhen لِشَخصfor the figure of الرَقيبthe watcher عِناfrom us غيابabsence
وَلِبَدرand for the full moon of السَماءthe sky مَنّاto us دُنوُّnearness
when the watcher's figure was absent from us,
and heaven's full moon was close to us.
