وَريش الذنابي مُستَقل فَطاير
Can you, on what remains of a wing you broke,
Are you still flying on your broken wing
and on tail feathers, rise aloft and then fly?
While free-flying sparrows have their feathers intact?

And how can the falcon fly when its wing is ruined,
How can the falcon fly when one wing is injured,
broken, and fate has snatched away its two hind talons?
Moving slowly, though destiny has been cruel?

أَلا لَيتَني ضُمَّت عَليَّ المَقابر
I had indeed been safe from the calamities of time.
I used to feel secure from the blows of fate,
Ah, would that the graves had been closed over me!
Oh, would that I were in the grave!
