ناعِسَة أَنجُمُها تُسحَبُ
Behold, al-Jawza (Orion) at her setting,
Behold, the constellation Sagittarius setting in the west,
drowsy, her stars dragged along.
Its stars dragging drowsily away.

يَنسَلُ مِنها كَوكَبٌ كَوكَبُ
Her girdle is slack as she moves westward;
Its belt slips off as it sinks into the horizon,
star after star slips away from her.
Star by star detaching itself and slipping away.

As though Sirius were a spearhead with
As though the archer's arrow were a silver thread
its pitch-dark brocade fastened to it.
Piercing the brocade of the vanishing night.

As though the gleam of Suhayl (Canopus) were the glow
As though Suhail's brilliance were a flashing blade
of a fire on a hill, shining brightly.
Stabbing holes in a dark tent.
