A shell split open to reveal lustrous pearls—
A shell split open to reveal fine pearls,
or a letter unsealed to disclose a poem,
Or a letter unsealed to reveal a string of verse,

الأَبيات مَوزونَةٍ بِقسطاس فِكر
and rhymes set true amid
And well-fashioned rhymes amid
verses weighed on the just scales of thought?
The verses, weighed on the scales of thought?

And maidens who came before me dressed in mourning—
And maidens appearing before me in mourning dress,
or lines resplendent in verse and prose?
Or lines resplendent with verse and prose?

No—by the solace and joy I find in a letter!
No—by my solace and my joy in a letter
Through it I know the festal joy of Adha and Fitr.
From which I gain the gladness of Adha and Fitr!
ماnot دَداdarkened (apparently intended: دجا) لَيلthe night of وَحشَتيmy loneliness قَطever إِلّاexcept that

كُنتُyou were (apparently intended: كُنتَ) ليfor me فيهِwithin it طالِعاًrising مثلlike بَدرa full moon
كُنتُ لي فيهِ طالِعاً مثل بَدر
Never did the night of my loneliness grow dark but
Never did the night of my loneliness darken, but
I found within it rising lights like a full moon.
You rose for me within it like a full moon,

وَاِبتِسام يَكف لَوعَةَ صَدري
With words that kindle longing for companionship,
With conversation that stirs longing for companionship,
and a smile whose burning ache my heart contains.
And a smile that quells the burning anguish in my breast.

Do not delay your reply to me—for my day
Do not delay your reply to me, for my day
is like an age, and my hour like a month.
Is like an age, and my hour like a month.
بِأَبيmay my father be your ransom لَوif قَدرتI could مِنfrom فَرطthe excess of شَوقيmy longing

كُنتُI would be طَيَّwithin the folds of الكِتابthe letter أَولthe first سَطرline
كُنتُ طَيَّ الكِتاب أَول سَطر
My father be your ransom! If, in the extremity of my longing, I could,
My father be your ransom! If I could, so great is my longing,
I would be the letter’s phantom at its very first line.
I would be within the letter’s folds, its very first line.
