قَدindeed فاقَsurpassed فيin الحَجمcupping حَذقاًin skill كُلَّevery حجامcupper
Abu Sulayman, Dawud ibn Bankala,
Abu Sulayman Da'ud ibn Banaklah
Has surpassed every cupper in the skill of cupping.
Has excelled all blood letters in skill
وَزانَand adorned ذاكَthat بِصَوتwith a voice لاnot يُجاوزهhe goes beyond it

And graced that with a voice he never lets stray
That was counterbalanced by a voice
Into idle chatter, save for indistinct speech.
Beyond excess save to clear the throat
لُطفاًgentleness وَرفقاًand care وَحَذقاًand skill فيin صِناعتِهِhis craft
وَخفةand a light touch لَمnot تَشنbe marred مِنهُon his part بِإِبرامby tiresome insistence
Gentleness, care, and skill in his craft,
Delicacy, care, and skill in his trade
And a light touch, unspoiled by tiresome insistence.
And lightness that never drew blood in error
لَولاwere it not for مَواقعpoints of contact مَوساهhis razor وَمشرطهand his lancet
I would have thought myself مِنهُbecause of him فيin أَضغاثtangles of أَحلامdreams
Were it not for the touches of his razor and his lancet,
Were it not for the places of his lancet and forceps
I would have thought myself, at his hands, in a tangle of dreams.
I would be free of him among confused dreams
