ياO حُسنَbeauty هَذاthis السَطحthe rooftop مِنas a مُتنّزهplace of recreation
يا حُسنَ هَذا السَطح مِن مُتنّزه
لِلعَينfor the eye ماwhat تَلتذtakes delight فيهِin it وَتَشتَهيand desires
لِلعَين ما تَلتذ فيهِ وَتَشتَهي
How lovely this rooftop is as a place of recreation!
O beauty of this rooftop garden, a delight
In it the eye finds all it delights in and desires:
For the eye, where it finds joy and desire
مِنof خُضرةgreenery نَضرتhas grown lush وَماءand water سائحflowing
مِن خُضرة نَضرت وَماء سائح
وَمدامةand wine حضرتis at hand وَبَهجةand radiance أَوجهfaces
وَمدامة حضرت وَبَهجة أَوجه
Fresh, flourishing greenery and flowing water,
In the fresh, verdant growth, flowing water,
And wine at hand, and the radiance of faces,
Fine wine prepared, and joyous, cheerful faces,
وَعِصابةand a company أُدباءmen of letters كُلevery شاعرpoet
وَعِصابة أُدباء كُل شاعر
وَالظَرفand refinement فيin الدُنياthe world إَلَيهُمto them يَنتَهيculminates
وَالظَرف في الدُنيا إَلَيهُم يَنتَهي
And a company of men of letters, each a poet,
A gathering of cultivated men of letters,
And all the world's refinement culminates in them.
Each a poet, the epitome of wit and grace,
تَهميrain down عُقودnecklaces الشعرpoetry بَينَamong عُقولَهُمtheir minds
تَهمي عُقود الشعر بَينَ عُقولَهُم
كَتَناثُرlike the scattering of المُرجانcoral مِنfrom عَقدa necklace بَهيsplendid
كَتَناثُر المُرجان مِن عَقد بَهي
Necklaces of verse rain down among their minds,
Strings of poetry adorn their minds,
Like coral scattering from a splendid necklace.
Like scattered coral of a resplendent necklace,
ياO فَرحةjoy لَوif كُنتُI were بَينَamong القَومthe company ياO
يا فَرحة لَو كُنتُ بَينَ القَوم يا
مَنone who لاnot يَطيبis pleasant لَناfor us المَقامthe stay سِوىexcept بِهِwith him
مَن لا يَطيب لَنا المَقام سِوى بِهِ
Oh, what joy if I were among the company! O
O what bliss, if I were among these men!
you, without whom our stay holds no pleasure!
For none but you makes our company sweet.
فَهلمَّso come نَجمَعlet us gather شَملَناour company وَنَظامَناand our harmony
فَهلمَّ نَجمَع شَملَنا وَنَظامَنا
ياO زينناour adornment وَأَمامand ahead of كُلevery مُفَّوهِeloquent speaker
يا زيننا وَأَمام كُل مُفَّوهِ
So come, let us reunite our company and restore our harmony,
Come, let us reunite and restore our accord,
O our adornment, foremost among all eloquent speakers!
O our grace and before all eloquent speakers,
وَمَتىand whenever تَجبyou respond فَكَأَنناthen it is as though we فيin رَوضَةٍa garden
وَمَتى تَجب فَكَأَننا في رَوضَةٍ
وَمَتىand whenever تَغبyou are absent فَكَأنناthen it is as though we فيin مَهمَهِa trackless desert
وَمَتى تَغب فَكَأننا في مَهمَهِ
And whenever you respond, it is as though we are in a garden,
When you are present, it is as if we are in a meadow,
And whenever you are absent, it is as though we are in a trackless desert.
When you are absent, it is as if we are in gloom.
