ياO لَيلةnight حليتwas adorned بِزَهرwith the blossoms of نُجومهاits stars
وَسهرتهاand I stayed awake through it حَتّىuntil بَدَتit appeared ليto me عاطِلاunadorned
Ah, a night adorned with the blossoms of its stars!
O night that dawned with the flowers of its stars
And I kept vigil through it until it appeared to me unadorned.
And kept me awake until morning seemed vain,
لَمdid not يَرضَbe content لَيليmy night إِذwhen تَجَلىshone forth بَدرُهُits full moon
حَتّىuntil أَرانيit showed me فيهِin it مِنكَof you مُخايِلاlikenesses
My night, when its full moon shone forth, was not content
My night was not pleased when its moon appeared
Until it showed me, within that moon, likenesses of you.
Until it showed me in it estranged from you.
وَطَفَقَتand I began أَرمقto gaze at مِنهُfrom it بَدراًa full moon طالِعاًrising
وَطَفَقتand I began أَذكرto remember مِنكَof you بَدراًa full moon آفِلاsetting
And I began to gaze at its rising full moon,
Then I began to glimpse in it a rising moon,
And I began to remember you as a setting full moon.
And I began to recall in you a setting moon.
