التوت نحَيس بطعمه نمّام
مَنwhoever يسرقهsteals it يطبّعit stains أكمامهhis sleeves
مَن يسرقه يطبّع أكمامه
The mulberry is ill-starred, its taste a tattletale;
The mulberry is ill-natured, a tattletale through its taste.
whoever steals it, it leaves its mark upon his sleeves.
It stains the sleeves of whoever steals it.
يستاهلdeserves ذاthis النكيدspiteful thing مَنsomeone who يطعنهstabs it
يستاهل ذا النكيد مَن يطعنه
بالشوكwith thorns إذاif رآهhe sees it يومone day قدّامهbefore him
بالشوك إذا رآه يوم قدّامه
This vexatious thing deserves someone to stab it
This spiteful thing deserves someone to stab it,
with a fork, should he ever see it before him.
With thorns, if he sees it before him one day.
