كليلlike night زالdeparted عنfrom صُبحa dawn أناراshone
The hair was removed, and the face shone,
The hair and face have been removed, glowing
like night lifted from a radiant dawn.
Like a dark night that has cleared for the radiant dawn
ودارand circulated السعدgood fortune بينamong الدورthe houses يسريflowing
فماso it did not أخلىleave empty منof الأفراحjoys داراa house
And good fortune made its rounds, flowing among the houses,
And happiness circulates among the houses
leaving no house empty of joys.
Leaving no home devoid of joys
وغرّدand warbled فيon الرُّباthe hills طيرthe bird التهانيof congratulations
يُبَشّرناbrings us glad news بأنthat الهمّsorrow طاراflew away
And the bird of congratulations warbled on the hills,
The birds of celebration sing in the countryside
bringing us glad news that sorrow had flown away.
Bearing the good news that worries have flown away
ورجّعand trilled مُنشداًsinging أهلاًwelcome وسهلاًand be at ease
بوقتto a time فيهin which مَنthe one whom نهواهwe love him زاراvisited
And it trilled, singing a warm welcome
And a singer returns, greeting all with welcome
to a time when the one we love came to visit.
In a time when even the forbidden are visited

And a full moon's head was beautified by shaving,
With the shaving of his head, the full moon regains its beauty
with beauty that captivated and soared in pride.
Captivating all with its elegance and pride

May God prolong the days of rejoicing
May God perpetuate these days of celebration
for his family, and adorn the homes with him.
For his family and bless these lands
حزينكمyour sorrowful one ويومand on the day حلقتI shaved رأسيmy head
رأيتI saw الشمسthe sun قدhad طلعتrisen نهاراin the daytime
As for your sorrowful one—on the day I shaved my head,
When I shaved my head, my loved ones
I saw the sun had risen in the daytime.
I saw the sun had risen in daylight
وسارتand traveled طولthroughout ليلتهits night نجومstars
يميناًto the right ذاthis one يسيرmoves وذاand that one يساراto the left
And stars traveled all through its night,
The stars of the long night progression
this one moving right, and that one left.
Some to the right and some to the left

غيوثdownpours لاnot أطيقI can bear لهاfor them اصطباراpatient endurance
And joy came to my family, while I had
Joy has come to my family and me
downpours I could not patiently endure.
An overwhelming happiness beyond patience
وفارand gushed الدمعtears منfrom وثباتthe leaps موسىof a razor
كقطlike a cat ظنّthought شعرthe hair الرأسof the head فاراa mouse
And tears gushed from the razor's leaps,
Tears flowed like Moses' fountain
like a cat that mistook the hair on the head for a mouse.
A cat who thought the hair of my head took flight
وأميand my mother بالجكارةout of spite حينwhen أبكيI weep
تزغرطululates منwho بهذاthis قدalready أشاراsuggested
And my mother, to spite me, when I weep,
And my mother jokingly as I cried
ululates—who suggested this?
Grumbled, who told you to do this
