People have been created as people since ancient times.

And whoever among them has walked has not been without a foot.

When one of them walks to attend to his business,

His back is behind him, and his face is in front.

Their ears have heard the clatter of runaways [uncertain reading].

And the pitcher's ear is deaf to them.

Their horses always walk on their legs,

But they have never tasted food without a mouth.

Despite their short stature, they climb onto camels, and do not

Fear being thrown from the humps because of the camels' height.

And around the camels' necks they put—pardon the mention—

Worn-out sandals; out of dullness, the camels take no offense.

Yet among the people, they observe no manners:

How often they have shot out dung that hits their faces!

On land and at sea, they do not forget their eating,

No indeed—nor their drinking, outside the sanctuary or within it.

One day I saw them set out their vessels

On the dining table among friends, laden with bounty.

So I began to rejoice, while hopes fed me.

Suddenly they proved insufficient—alas, my regret!

And once my eyes saw them fall short, they streamed with tears.

And I went from a hope that failed into pain.

And I was certain of heartbreak once they cleared away,

By eating, what they had set upon their table.
