تُعطيه البُزيز في فمه
Oh, how sweet the little one and his mother are!
Oh how sweet the little one and his mother
She puts the little teat into his mouth.
She gives him his pacifier in his mouth
حينwhen يشربhe drinks بُزيزهhis little teat يبقىhe then begins
حين يشرب بُزيزه يبقى
يطلبhe asks for التُّخَيتthe little bed يَلمّهto enfold him
يطلب التُّخَيت يَلمّه
When he drinks from his little teat, he starts
When he drinks his pacifier he remains
asking for the little bed to enfold him.
Asking for the mattress to cuddle him
ياماOh, how أحلىlovely نهارthe day تدهينهoiling him
ياما أحلى نهار تدهينه
فيin زيتهhis oil وفيand in مرسينهhis myrtle
في زيته وفي مرسينه
Oh, how lovely the day of oiling him,
Oh how sweet the day she oils him
in his oil and in his myrtle.
With his oil and with his balm
لهhe has سوسوsūsū (meaning uncertain) علىupon جبينهhis forehead
له سوسو على جبينه
منfrom يأسهhis despair يزولvanishes همّهhis sorrow
من يأسه يزول همّه
He has a 'sūsū' upon his forehead;
He has a lullaby on his forehead
from his despair, his sorrow vanishes.
From his despair his worries disappear
ياماOh, how أحلاهsweet he is وهوwhile he is فيin تختهhis bed
ياما أحلاه وهو في تخته
مشدودtightly bound القماطthe swaddling cloth ياoh بختهhis good fortune
مشدود القماط يا بخته
Oh, how sweet he is while in his bed,
Oh how sweet he is when in his bed
tightly swaddled—how lucky he is!
The mosquito net stretched, what luck
والشبكand the netting يرىis seen منfrom تحتهbeneath him
والشبك يرى من تحته
ورجليهand his legs عليهupon it يلتمّواdraw together
ورجليه عليه يلتمّوا
And the netting is visible beneath him,
And the net he sees from under it
and his legs draw together upon it.
And his legs on it curl up
هذاthis الوقتmoment هذاthis مسعودblessed
هذا الوقت هذا مسعود
ياOh فرحthe joy هذاthis المولودnewborn
يا فرح هذا المولود
This moment—this very one—is blessed.
This time this is blissful
Oh, the joy of this newborn!
Oh joy this newborn
ياO مولىLord الورىhumankind ياO مقصودOne sought
يا مولى الورى يا مقصود
فرّحmake joyful بهthrough him أبوهhis father وأمهand his mother
فرّح به أبوه وأمه
O Lord of humankind, O sought-after One,
Oh Lord of all people, oh sought out
give his father and mother joy through him.
